Visual effects Schools

Over the last year I have been building a portfolio, working with software, yada, yada. Anyways here is my thing, I've been trying to save up for Gnomon, but when it comes to housing it blows the whole plan. I found two schools in Vancouver, Van Arts, And Vancouner Film School that have Visual effects program and have been doing them for some time. I need some advice big time guys. Any body have some experience friends who went up there to those schools and did the programs? Gnomon is still in the picture but after something as as a training update, and furthing my knowledge on software. It's gonna have to be the only way to do it.

Gnomon all the way... I've hired half a dozen gnomon grads in the past year. The
program is turning out some good talent thats ready to work. Even more important,
the networking between gnomon grads is impressive.

I've known that if you wanna be into the industry after two years of nothing and nothing at all but training, go to Gnomon. Because you'r getting picked up by someone depending on your level of quality and knowledge you sucked in during those two years. My whole problem as an over all is I can't afford to be out in LA in this point of my life, I have half a degree in editing, and I am looking at getting some pre-education some place else than going to Gnomon and taking there shake 3 week course, and there Maya courses if I get a job out in LA to make my skills better.

The volume of work in LA is staggering. Its worth the risk and investment.

When you say you cant afford to live out in LA, what are you basing that
on? With a roomate or a few, LA can actually be very affordable. Plus,
the busboy/waiter/you name it while working toward an industry career
is standard here.

What Im basing it off of is the 60 hours a week that you have to be in school for the 2 year program, and basically cant have a job. If you go part time the price of the school goes up another 6 grand or more. I have no connections In LA yet, I live in BF no wear Michigan. And a place that I can go and get put up in housing better yeah. But like you have been saying and I have been dwelling there isnt a better place I know of than Gnomon. Where can you walk out of and get a killer job. Im Just sitting on a lot of debt allready from 2 school previous, and dont know what I should do, I dont want to get out there and go broke and not be able to finish the dream school is what im kinda getting at. Im thinking get some experience in the field first then tackle gnomon, but I dont know. I wish I had dont this when i was younger and still had money, and didnt blow it on art school.

I agree with Greggl, as far as LA being affordable. Gnomon has a very interesting program... But keep in mind that most vfx gurus didn't go to a vfx school... A fine art school will be a better route in my opinion for vfx. Too many young people are focusing/relaying too much on the software and hardware, and not enough in artistry and good craftmanship.... They use tools they don't fully understand... So much so that I don't recruit junior staff from so called vfx school anymore. We look for graduates from fine arts school, film schools, designers, architect etc...

Well I have a art backgroung, I spent 3 years maybe not long enough at the art institute in chicago studying motion graphics, and you had to do clasic arts along with that, If I go to Vancouver film school I have to focus on Life drawing and so on my first to quarters pretty hard. But I cant fight the fact that yeah Gnonom is churning out some good people but if i can go live for 300 dollars a month + utities with a 2 other roomates. Im a little more attracted to that, and the program is more than half of what gnomon is right now. I'll hit them up when Im done, take there shake, and maya fast track classes.
