Visiting LA

Hi guys!

This summer I'll be in LA for a month (august 16-september 11). During that month I'll be going to an English School in 10850 Wilshire Blvd. I don't really know where I'll be sleeping, but it'll be in someone's house (you know those student interchange programs, the house is supposed to be no further than 60 minutes via public transport). I would love to know what to visit during that time, the schools organizes different excursions and activities, but I would also like to prepare my own trips to places closely related to filmmaking. I don't know, any museum, studio or even shop that is related to filmmaking would be nice to visit.

I'm open to any suggestion..hehehe, One question though, for those who live there, would you mind telling me some basic product prices so that I can calculate the money I need to spend a month there.

Thanks!

I've been reading a bit and I found out that the WB studio tour is pretty interesting, more than the Universal one. Any of you have experience with it?

Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

What are you asking about?

Sorry, so true, I forgot to say what I wanted to know.

I'm more interested on what a taxi can cost, is there any public transportation monthly or weekly pass? other than that, how much can a bottle of water cost? and more into entertainment, how much can a cinema ticket cost? Those are some basic things that can help me calculate my financial stuff.... Rent is not a problem because I'll be living for a month in someone's house with breakfast and dinner included.

More into the sightseeing and activities side. What do you recommend to do to get the most out of the stay, are there any interesting film related events during august and the first two weeks of september? Interesting museums (I already have on my list the getty, but is there something more related to film history and craft). I In general, any recommendations are welcome (I'm not asking anyone to organize my trip hahaha just give out ideas and I'll see what sounds interesting and look for prices days and that kind of stuff).

I did the same last year with my trip to Toronto and I followed Dvxuser's suggestions, and I had a great time over there!

Thanks!

Enjoy your experience. What do YOU want to see? Me, personally, I hate going into LA/Hollywood. But for someone who has never experienced Hollyweird, you are in for a treat.

Take a walk down Sunset. Do the WB and Universal tour. LOL, I was working on a Universal pic on the lot, and when the tour bus came by, I would always do something outrageous, just for the tour-goers. Lick my gun, handstands, etc. LOL, just to make the tour-guides job "interesting".

"Why is he licking his gun?"
"Um, he is prepping for his role...............I think"

I actually heard this, LOL. Ahhh, acting, so much fun.

The WB tour and the Paramount tour are pretty good. You could visit film tools or the studio depot if you want to shop for film equipment/accessories. Visit Santa Monica Beach, Third ST Promenade, Venice, and the Walk of Fame. If you are at the Walk of fame, drive up to this place --> http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...116399,-118.342327&spn=0.000937,0.001817&z=20 which offers a really nice view over the city, and you will also see the hollywood sign.

...and if you are into roller coasters, visit six flags magic mountain.... Universal Studios is pretty good too, make sure you get to see shows like Water World....

Just about anything that may be of any interest to you guys will be of interest for me hahaha. You hate LA/Hollywood, but I'm sure that there is only one thing (or more) that you do like, even if it is just a bar or a museum or even a shop, it could be interesting to know:thumbsup:

Michael, thanks for the suggestions, I'm a roller coaster and theme park fan so six flags will be one of the first things to visit!

You can get pretty much any place in Los Angeles via the bus/subway system - if you have some time to spend, at it. Buses will take you from the Inland Empire to the beaches for cheap, but it will take some time.

Taxis are the most expensive way to get around town. Maybe you could just use them for very short hops, from one bus/subway nexus to another...

I'm not sure but I suspect that your address on Wilshire is in my dentist's building. Or very close by.

Hollywood Blvd @ Highland (walk of fame, El Capitan, tourist stuff, etc - only if cheesy-for-a-laugh sounds interesting but the theater interiors are vintage and very cool)
Melrose Avenue (betweeen Highland and La Cienega or LaBrea)
Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills (disgusting tacky 24k shoppy-shoppy-conspicuous-consumption-land but an interesting place to people-watch)
Griffith Observatory
Griffith Park hiking trails (for the best possible view of the City of Los Angeles, spread out below the hills)
Santa Catalina Island - go over by boat for a day. Hiking, nature trails, very beautiful place to visit, maybe still wild boar hunting but not sure
Farmers' Market on Mid-Wilshire
