Virus & malware creators need to be tortured!

I'm not familiar with DeepFreeze, but just from your description I can see ways in which those systems can be infected with a virus. Granted, the virus might only live on the workstation until the next login, but that could be a day, a week, or longer. Even a single day is plenty of time for a virus to do what it does -- send spam emails, propagate itself to other innocent users, etc.

How would such a virus get introduced into the system in the first place? Same way as always -- via websites, emails, text messages, flash drives, etc. Then, as you say, it can hide itself in the data files, re-introducing itself as necessary.

So while such a system might be safer to some extent, it's certainly not virus-proof. And would still need to have antivirus software running to keep it safe.

As I said, no system is perfect. I agree with you that ghosting your PC is a quick way to get back up and running, but that assumes you didn't ghost it with a dormant virus already present. And it still doesn't negate the need for antivirus software.

Just had a flick through DeepFreeze website, it seems they also have another product called 'Anti-Executable'

basically you control a white-list of executables that can run on a machine,

its draconian yes, but then THAT would negate the need for any Anti-Virus.

Actually a less draconian system already exists in Vista and Windows 7, the much annoying (User Access Control UAC), the one that keeps asking for permission to do anything.

Its not as bullet proof as the commercial product above, but there is method in the madness, i.e. how do you stop a virus? don't run it in the first place.
