Virus help

Look ma no hands
Hey guys. I'm about ready to throw my computer out the window and then jump after it. If anyone could help me I'd really appreciate it.

I managed to get infected with some sort of virus. I started getting warnings from my firewall that something calling itself outlook was trying to access the internet. I blocked it, did some research and followed the directions to clean it but Norton didn't find it, so I'm ****ed.

Everything is slow as hell and my CPU is running at 100% almost all the time. I'm surprised I was even able to post this.

If anyone has any ideas, I would definitely appreciate it.

Has anything happened to the desktop? Are you getting some fishy messages that you PC is infected and needs some sort of spyware-cleaner?

Try Spybot: Search and Destroy

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Be careful NOT to make any back-ups of important files while your computer is still infected. If you back-up yor files now then the copies might be infected by the virus and then, once you've got your computer running smoothly, your back-up files will infect your computer again. Good luck.

Turn off restore mode, delete any old restore points.

(1) Run first Housecall (google it) it runs from the wepage via java or installed plugin.

(2) After Housecall is finished, if you have any virus or worms, then it should kill it

(3) Now, clean up, use SpyBot S&D, Adaware, and finally Hijack this, delete any thing that is bad(be carefull what you delete, because you could delete something important)

(4) fire safe mode up and run hijack this again see if those bastards are still there if so kill em and use Killbox to kill 'em next time you boot

(5) reboot and everything should be hanky panky

Hope that helps man

get rid of norton... ihave it i hate it. it tries to do everyhtign for you, but its not very good. DO what Anhar said. he has good ideas. find another ANti VIrus software. NOrton misses to much and its too intrusive on system resources.

Spyware Blaster is a great program to run in the background once you get it cleaned. Really helps to keep infections clear.

In addition to the above mentioned programs, I like Spyware Doctor. Found a lot of stuff on my system awhile back. Recommended!

Thanks, guys.

Anhar- I'm running Housecall as we speak. Since it's web based, it won't be done running its scan for about another 10-11 hours. I hope it works. I really don't want to have to reformat.

I used to have similar problems with my old computer running Norton. I got so discouraged I purchased a new computer and started over.

On my new computer, which I've had for more than a year, I'm using McAfee Security Center and I haven't had any problems at all. After you get your system cleaned up I highly recomend McAfee [or just about anything other than Norton] :)

Thanks for the help, guys. I tried several different methods and was able to clean out a lot of crap, but I still ended up reformatting. It was time for a clean slate.

I'm back, baby!

Thanks, Blaine! I was missing this place.

I lost/abandoned a couple of things in the process, though. Does anyone know of a really solid firewall that won't break the bank? I'm also looking for an easy-to-use web design program. Something that doesn't require a knowledge of programming would be great.
