virus help

Hey guys,

Maybe someone with experience dealing with PC viruses can help me. I've been infected by one called, "Personal Guard 2009". Most website searches tell me to download Malwarebytes as it's free, dependable software that removes the virus. However, I already have that software and this virus stops it from opening and downloading now.

So I need to find other (free) software that not only scans it but removes the virus. There is free software out there that scans it, but does anyone know of reliable software that removes it too?

Any other ideas to remove this would be great, I'm not very visrus savvy.

Thanks!

I googled and found a link here (first one too) that has a software download BUT it also describes a manual removal method by using the registry.

Don't download the software, instead try the manual method. It requires some basic knowledge of registry editing, pretty easy. Just ask if you're not sure.

system restore to an earlier date (before you started having problems) and then reinstall the software.

Hijack This. Best virus-killing program EVER and it's free.

Just be careful, it's for advanced users and you could end up deleting something important if you're not careful. Though, if you've backed up your files then you don't have a whole lot to lose. It's pretty easy to spot what you need to get rid of but get someone to help you if you aren't sure.

I've done a fair bit of manual VR, Hijack this alone is not enough, sure it gives you a starting point, usually you need KillBox and a lot of patience.

@Alveraz,

I might be jumping the gun but it may be a rootkit, I just hope its not the case.

What you need to do is check your startup list first, your AntiVirus needs to run BEFORE the virus has a chance to run, it may be worth starting in safemode then running Malewarebytes.

But before that run and create a log via Hijack this...

I fixed it, thanks guys! I ended up using an external drive to download malwarebytes on, then aimed it at my PC and killed the infection.

Thanks!
