Virtues of live performance vs. DVD

Just wondering if anyone else shares my philosophy on this point. I've seen a few concerts over the years most on them muddied in memory by time and other factors. I don't attend live stuff these days if I can get a DVD of the tour. The reason being that Though I don't have the worlds best home theater system It's still good enough to fool me into thinking I'm actually there ($2000.00 system experience) I get a frontrow and better seat, no lineups no gibberish, just pure and wonderful music at any desired decibel level. I spend $30.00 for the DVD concert that I can attend as many times as I like. So I see no reason to see it live. Example: saw the stones Bridges to Babylon tour when it came @ $85.00 Bought the DVD for $25.00. The dvd experience was far more enjoyable by virtue of the facts mentioned above. Anyone else thinking this way?

I'm with ya. I don't even go to big national shows anymore, just local bands in small clubs. I can't justify spending that much money because I rarely come away satisfied.

This is a tuff one. What I [think] I know for sure is that outdoor concerts are rarely as good as indoor; the picnic atmosphere is too casual and seems to instill a somewhat lazier attitude on the perfomers.

I go way back, saw Hendrix and many of the "classic" bands live multiple times and my recollection (muddied as well from time and, I imagine, the same "other factors") is that the studio stuff is always the best. I equate it to viewing raw film footage to a finished result after the work of a talented editor/recording engineer. My 2 piasters.

I too love the concerts on DVD. There are a few that are in constant rotation n my monitor while I write or edit.
But I have seen a few of the concerts that I have DVDs for, and each one I feel fortunate to have ben there. The energy you get from th event is not the same as at home. Saying that it would really be tough to have to make the choice from one or the other. I have seen Gabriels real world more time than should be possible. Or a new favorite is Ben Harper at the Hollywood bowl. Now if I had to choose either seeing the show once, or getting to go back and enjoy whenever I want, well then the DVD may be the choice. But the live show can not be replaced.
