Virtual filmmaking collaboration

Disclaimers…

(*) This may have already been discussed here or elsewhere, if so, I apologize in advance.
(*) Something like this may already exist. (again, my-uninformed-bad)
(*) I’ll try and compress this and keep it not-so-wordy (pardon the over use of ‘etc’, done for brevity).

I’m in the same boat as I imagine a lot of people are when it comes to having a local peer group or professionals available for getting input, critiques etc regarding writing, locations, editing, etc for a specific project. Forums like this are excellent for getting general input and tips but because of it’s informal and obviously very public nature, certain aspects of creation can’t be publicly broadcast obviously.

I for one would love formal input in many areas and someone to collaborate with. In fact, my idea for an excellent scenario would be to have input from several people, filmmaking by committee if you will. There’s always something that could be missed or done better.

First, the practicalities…

(*) Protection of work? Non-disclosure agreements faxed, signed and faxed back. We do this every day in my profession. And for the ultra-paranoid (nothing wrong with that) encryption of all exchanges, binary or text (clips, discussions, etc).

(*) Remuneration for services? Some people want the experience for the credit, self promotion. Some want cash and every situation changes for an individual (This project will land on a shelf imo, while I want to work on it I need cash for this OR this project is going for festival submission, I just want to be involved for the credit and experience, etc). Again, real world contracts. (everyone gets ‘paper’ with everyone)

(*) Formal input UI and documents. In other words, for editing a script for example, there would be an “Opinion for change”, “Reason”, “Reference” and then a general note input (something like that, not exactly like that, just running through here).

(*) What can be collaborated on over the Internet imo?
-      Writing
-      Editing
-      Casting
-      Story boarding
-      Location selection
-      General production and executive production input
-      Review of dailies
-      Music selection and/or creation
-      I’m sure there’s something else

(Some things can’t be exchanged and really critiqued due to degrade of quality in compression artifacts, schedules etc, obviously)

The service (free)…
A centralized and formal collection of writers, editors, etc with their credits, their preferred project types and remuneration requirements (all extremely customizable i.e. I don’t want to put a fixed rate down, “It depends on the project”).

As the principle, you obviously have the final say. You may choose 3 people to help with formal opinions ‘_only_’ on a script for example and take or leave the opinions. You’ll have to give credit however, just choose to maybe not work with someone on your next project. The goal is to limit conflict as much as possible: conflict = wasted time, potentially tarnished reputations over differences unrelated to filmmaking, expected inter-personal tension, etc.

Potential work flow…

(*) My script is finished; I’d like formal input and possibly edits from A and B. Choose your collaborators for script input, get NDA, remuneration papers signed, then exchange.

(*) Casting: You can get off-the-bat “I worked with him or her and they were great” or choose several of your own for a part, shoot rehearsals, then ask for casting input.

(*) Location selection: Just shoot with a still or film then post to your collaborators.

(*) Editing: Obvious here (and this is getting to long, sorry everyone)

All in all and overall, this sounds like executive production but there are differences here and there and the ala cart nature means you chose A for script input, B for their eye and timing for editing, C for music, etc.

Just based on my experience on this board, there are several people I’d like formal input from regarding many aspects. I know it’s impractical for everyone to fly someone out etc but imo there’s a very great deal of valuable input that can be handled and managed professionally and safely over the wire. I for one want to do straight-to-DVD original projects so the quality has to at the very least compete.

Am I a foolish utopian dreamer here or what do you guys think? (And again, if this already exists, I'll dump this post and save the server space  ;D)

BTW: I'd be glad to set this up, site, lawyer input, etc. I'm not at all interested in money from the service, I would just love to have a formalized input structure for my projects.

Something same/similar is taking place as we speak amongst selected DVX Users. That being said?

So what! This site has a gazillion DVX users that might be looking for the same thing. Orchestrate it and see what happens!
I still want to do the ZOMBIE thing.  :-/ :P :D ;D
That’s a great case in point: I love zombie movies (I loved 28 Days but refrain from pushing my thoughts or disagreements such as the deterioration of government, society and future caused the military guys to act as they did in the 3rd act truly believing that the world as they knew it had vanished and the egotistical commander <a prerequisite for such a post to an extent> enforced that belief on very impressionable youths who just happen to carry weapons in uniform which explained to me why the single hold out from that group think <who happened to be the oldest military guy> made his moral stance that ultimately cost his life, but anyway, that’s another topic, sorry, bottom line here is that I totally bought into that possible reaction and behavior, the only down fall to me was that the scale of isolation that could cause such behavior couldn't really be presented as it could have turned into a focal point, man that was a long sentence).

I may not be able to create a movie like that from a principle stand point (cost, time) but would absolutely love to have input. But as a purely hypothetical example, you and I can’t exchange proprietary thoughts such as “what’s your spin” or “what’s the unique nature of the zombie circumstance (why are they zombies?)” etc, etc, etc.

Another example, I’m a musician first then a wannabe filmmaker (which I hope to switch that according to whether I frankly suck at making films or not). It’d be great to maybe do music for that, again, it’s business and it would have to be a formal exchange (copyrights, publishing considerations, I still get BMI checks from an NBC made for TV movie that my band at the time appeared in, 11.5 seconds = $1,200.00 for the first check and that's absolutely NOT out of the film makers pocket, the beauty of publishing obviously impacts remuneration meaning you can get some fantastic music talent IF you’re going to be broadcast for little or nothing up front).

Another point is that if everyone is realistic about their own abilities from the ground up of filmmaking, they may find that they can’t write very well or they can’t edit at all. To go the lone wolf route for some would cause a potentially good project to go bad. This collaboration site or whatever would be a place where (a) people can play to their strengths and have input on other projects and (b) get help on their weaknesses obviously. A fantastic editor may have horrible taste in casting for example.

Anyway, mind still rolling…
