Viral Marketing: Or how I caused small town mass hysteria.

Interesting title, eh? See, it's already working.

A friend and I are going to be putting together a large (by our modest standards) viral marketing / ARG for a short film / music video in the next couple of months.

It's going to include fake myspace/facebook accounts, fake news broadcasts, a local treasure hunt, and hopefully a candlelight vigil.

I will keep this thread updated with info, so everyone here can sit back and watch the fun.

If anyone has any experience with planning guerrilla / viral marketing campaigns, I'd love to hear your insight. Same goes for legal advice. Heh.

It's going to really start picking up steam in the next couple of weeks. (I hope.) So stay tuned. :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Viral marketing would involve something that would induce me to want to pass it along to others. Which this doesn't. All it is is yet another post in a community site devoted to Independant filmmaking. It has no inherent viral quality any more than any other post in the community.

Its really important to understand the concept of what viral marketing is as a first step.

I'd say craigbowman is correct, you have more of what I would think of as a guerrilla marketing campaign with some viral elements. Of course, there is no reason as to why you could not add a more specific viral marketing component to what you already have planned.

You might be on to something with the fake news broadcasts. Put those on Youtube and other video sharing sites. Same with the fake myspace/facebook accounts and the ARG.

There is a good list of ideas on this page -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_marketing

This thread isn't viral marketing. This thread is a place to discuss tactics and watch a campaign unfold. And isn't anything viral about it yet, because we haven't produced anything for it.

Nektonic, thanks for the link. We are going for a cross between the approaches they used for The Dark Knight and Cloverfield. (Combining real life scavenger hunts, and online characters and events.)

We live in a very tight knit community, so we are aiming to spread this thing mostly within the community. It's going to be very localized. And it's probably not going to make a lot of sense to an outsider.

Nioz2, you're getting close. Very close. ;)

You made the statement, "Interesting title, eh? See, it's already working."

Which indicates you are stating the title demonstrates viral marketing. If you want to communicate "blue" don't write "green".

I apologize if I offended. I thought that line might cause confusion, but I decided to leave it anyway.

In any case, do you have any experience with alternative marketing, or unconventional ways of creating buzz before the product is produced?
