Does anyone here have the Vinten Vision 5? I was wondering about the pros and cons of it and how it compares to the Vision 3? Which would be a better match for my HVX with and without an M2 on it?
I think that the vision 5 would be a little too much for the hvx. The Vision 3 can definitely take that kind of weights and it has gotten great reviews. But I think the Cartoni Focus would do even better in this price range and its cheaper!
I often use a Vinten 3 system decked out with an HVX, M2, Matte Box, Follow Focus, 7" monitor and an obie light and it handles it just fine. The key is to know the weight and use the appropriate spring. I've used small (PD-150) to full-size rigs on it and it handles like a dream. I have a two-stage which is a great, light-weight compact system that I've transported easily on slung on my back on my ducati. The only downside for me is the 75mm bowl. Sometimes I've needed a 100mm system to interop with a jib or other system.
Overall, I like vinten systems, so if the vision 5 works with your weight class and your budget then sweet. But I suggest that you see if you can rent one from a local house and try it for yourself.
Is there a Vision 5? The ranges starts with Vision3, then Vision 6 and up (looking at my pdf catalogue). Anyhow, I am very happy with my Vision 3 carrying a basic HVX. I wanted a Vision 6 but could not justify (a) the greater price (b) greater weight when the main advantage is that you can easily adjust counterbalance for different rigs just by dialling it in, instead of changing springs - which is inconvenient if you frequently change rigs e.g. from fully loaded with matte box and monitor, to plain vanilla camera.
And if you can afford it, i highly recommend the carbon-fibre sticks: it works sweetly and is pretty sturdy for its weight. I agree with PureHVX that the 75mm bowl can be a problem - common to all 75mm bowls: for me, the smaller surface area means you have to really tighten the lock if, like me, you like a heavy drag on the movements.
