Vinten Pro 5 head problems

I have problem with Vinten Pro 5 (old) head: when making fast panning head doesn't moves slightly it makes "jump", such shake is only at the beginning of panning, latter it moves normal, but if I want to make move to other side it is the same. Less tight head is fixed less is the shake. I hope I explained it clear:))


So what's the problem? Is it fixable? I don't want to take head a part, because afraid of lubricant flow out. Is it safe to open head?
 
Those older Vinten heads are junk, in my opinion. And to make it worse, the Vinten repair shops charge a fortune to service them.

The only danger in opening the head is that you won't get it back together again, I don't think there's anything hazardous in there.

I think the Pro-5 is equivalent to the old Manfrotto 501 heads, so you may get some help by searching here or on DVinfo.net for Manfrotto 501 problems. But contacting Vinten is probably the best idea.
