Vimeo offering $10K to distribute first through them

Big fan of Vimeo, but... They really need to step up their game on the marketing side to the general public. Vimeo isn't a destination for a lot of people yet like YouTube is. Until that happens you're not going to get the eyeballs that create the audience that generates the revenue.
The other thing they need to fix asap is their search function. Holy crap is it bad! You can know the exact title and still not find it easily. In their defense, YouTube can be bad on the searches too because of the sheer volume of crap and reposts.

I asked them about search a couple months back and they said they were working on it. I used it all the time and worked great before, but hasn't been for the last year or so.

Maybe what they need is a netflix-like portal for currated content. They could also use better integration with smart TVs and other set top style boxes. I have about 6 ways to watch netflix right now, four of those ways being on my TV and boxes hooked to it. I can only can get vimeo on my phone and computer. Neither my TV, blu-ray player or other boxes have vimeo.

If they fix the search function maybe people would listen. WHat happened to their search feature. Its horrible now!

Atleast I make some money in Youtube due to the advertisements from the high number of views. In vimeo I have to pay to become a user with ability to upload large files.

Recently I realised that people can download from youtube. One of my film trailers which has got some 80k+ views was downloaded by some guy and reuploaded and in three months that had got 66k views. It came to my notice and I complained to youtube and took it down. That is the downside of youtube.

Their search used to work, they purposely made it impossible to use for some reason. I use google now to search Vimeo

It's really time consuming removing copies, I put two watermarks on my videos to discourage theft and most don't attempt to remove them. At least they are advertising my channel when they steal. The revenue from youtube is great if you can get allot of views.

Well, works well for me. Have searched for mattebox reviews and found 44 pages, of actual mattebox review videos.

Funny, I got one page using your search for mattebox reviews . Tried to search for x920 and got 16,000 pages of nothing relevant. I must be using it wrong.

10k to exclusivity distribute their works... This has to be a joke. Maybe 300-400k for a feature if it's ok. I couldn't even afford to shoot a film of me sitting on the crapper and let it go for 10k.

If you read the details its not so bad. Its only 10K for initial rights for a short period of time. Its not like Vimeo is asking for exclusive rights for perpetuity for 10K. Also this is aimed at the festival movie crowd most of which would never see 400K for a feature ever.

It's not 10K and that's all you get. It's 10k up front, and then a 90/10 split and you get the 90. They keep the revenue until they get their 10k back, then it's a done deal and you can go somewhere else if you want.

It's more or less like any distribution deal online, except for the 10k up front for the right to have it first. I don't see how you can lose really. It's not like your movie is awesome and makes 5 million dollars and Vimeo gets it for 10k. You still make all the money if you do that well in online sales, or you get a deal with MGM etc.

My question like others is what is the criteria for this deal? Do they just screen them and pick and choose which ones they offer this deal to? If so, what are they looking for? Would they have given this deal to Birdemic?

I think it's only open to films that are screening at the Toronto International Film Festival as per the first sentence of the article:
"Vimeo is very serious about being a major distribution channel for independent small production films — so much so that it’s offering film makers presenting a movie in the Toronto International FIlm Festival $10,000 to debut their work on the site before anywhere else."
It'll be interesting to see if they expand this deal to other film festivals. Then it will be interesting to see if they actually do anything to promote it and make it a viable distribution channel. ...and by "interesting" I mean they should totally do this!

Well that's a great idea to let the film festival do the screening for you, and yes it would be very cool if they opened this up to other festivals.
