Viewing audio levels in Premiere

Okay, first off I'm using an ancient version of Premiere -- version 6.0. Not Pro.

I'm working on the audio for my feature 'Tangled Web'. Pretty much done, but I'm noticing the audio at the end of the movie is much louder than audio at the beginning.

To fix that, I want to be able to view graphically the audio levels as I play each scene -- with a simulated LED level display.

Premiere has the Audio Mixer, which I thought would help me -- but it's useless. It just won't display a level on many of the clips, and I can't figure out why. If I take all the audio filters off the clip, it will display the level. But that's not even consistent. On one clip I had "Bass/Treble" and "Equalizer" set. If I removed "Equalizer" and left "Bass/Treble", then Audio Mixer would display the level. But if I put the "Equalizer" back, it wouldn't.

However, on another clip I ONLY had "Bass/Treble" set, and Audio Mixer wouldn't display a level for that clip either. Both clips are 48000Hz 16-bit Stereo .WAV files. So I have no clue why Audio Mixer behaves the way it does.

Bottom line -- is there another, better, way for me to be able to view these levels?

Thanks in advance.

I discovered that if I move the audio clip to a different audio track, then move it back -- the Audio Mixer miraculously starts working for that audio clip. I'm still hopeful there's a better tool out there for this, though.
