Viewfinder cropping

Hi there,

First of all THANKs for making this forum.

I have a question. Is there a way to mask electronically the lcd or viewfinder to preview different aspect ratios other than the fixed 90% safety zone?

If not Do you guys have any way to get this (lens masking or so)?

Thanks a lot for your tips

Hey there and welcome! People need to know what camera you're using to help you out. DVX100? 100A? 100B? Canon? Sony? They're all welcome, but try posting in a specific camera forum for best results.

Electronically depends on the camera, but in the mean time: http://aspectcorrect.com/

the hvx200 is no longer the only camera in the world, there is now the hvx200a, and there there are a lot of toys like canon and sony,

To answer your question, I'm pretty sure the answer is no, you can get a matte box, or I giess you can put something over the lcd,

There's an idea for the enterprizing young person... templates like clear LCD protectors which have the various aspect ratios indicated by checkerboard or lines in the horizontal direction...

When one watches the 'special features' on the DVD's one sees the video monitors used by the production, and they all have a 'retectangular' template for what the 'film' will be.

I haven't looked at the referenced site... I'm just so damn cheap on such things... I'd probably just make my own...

i hear ya. all in all, it's 10 bucks plus $1.50 shipping. yeah, you could do it yourself. but if for no other reason it saves the time. i bought some and was happy.

WOW aspectcorrect.com is the answer!!

It would be nice if they add the electronic masking though in a future release

I made several of my own with different ratios and composition-guides by printing on a laser-printable transparency sheet. Took 10 minutes in Illustrator, and cost less than $1.

Do you know what's the aspect ratio tool to manage the pan/scan in edius 4.6? Maybe I should post this question in the Edius subforum. I will now :)

yea to bad it isn't HD.

what isn't HD? The XH-A1 or the LCD screen?

I'm not a fan of the aspect guidelines on the A1 since they are just white lines... they do provide a really nice template for creating your own aspect correct tho... something I plan on doing soon.
