Hey, Ive been getting free editions of Videomaker, I was wondering, do they have reliable information. They seem to have alot of good articles, but you cant always trust a magazine article, even if they specialize in film like videomaker

just wondering, thanks for any responses

Reliable? Yeah, I'd say it's a pretty reliable magazine, if also fairly basic. I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just to say- you're more likely to find an article explaining WHAT (as a random example) "chroma-key" is, rather than an article on how to pull it off convincingly.

The magazine's geared more toward the person who's fairly new to the world of DV, and in that, it does it's job outstandingly. It just depends on what you're looking for.

It's an enthusiast publication, although, I did see them at a rather large tradeshow this year, but that's probably to attract sponsors and advertisers, not subscribers. To step on their toes for a second, Videomaker ranks low in my book simply because of the large levels of scam advertisements they accept from Long Island based electronics stores. They knowingly contribute to their readers getting ripped off on a regular basis...

DV offers free one year subscriptions occasionally. American Cinematographer is also a good one...

I chatted briefly with Matthew York at NAB, because I ended up standing next to him on an escalator. (I"m told he's very good at answering e-mail from readers.) They try to make a presence at shows.

It's a reliable magazine, yes, but they seem to run the same kinds of articles every year. (I've seen a photo of a consumer cam with paper in front of its light for diffusion several times.) I think their test bench is a useful feature, though -- a little more upscale than most consumer-oriented mags, and accessible to beginners.
