Videography Salary

I am currently at a company that nets 17 million a year and a postion just opened for me as a videographer. What is a good salary price to pitch? I will bring in all my own equipment into the job. I will do everything from producing dvds for sale to a monthly blog with video. Please help.

it depends on what kind of value you feel your services will add to the company. also depends on the quality of your work and your current salary. i'd probably start around $150k.

maybe you should think of it as a price quote for a year-long job for a different company. then deduct a resonable amount based on the fact that you will being paid a salary with (i'm assuming) benefits. if you're going to be pitching the idea to reasonable business people, i'd certainly recommend highlighting the value your services will be providing.

There will be guys lining up around the block to do this job at $40k. Probably hundreds on this board would be glad to do it at $30k. For many, making a living at video would be a dream come true, a dream job. So before you decide on a number, factor in competition, what it's worth to the company, what you wouldn't settle for going below, and what other opportunities this will prevent you from taking. A talented freelancer could easily do $40k a year in video and only work one or two days a week; as an employee you'll be working 40 hours every week. But then again you'll likely qualify for health insurance, 401(k), dental, vacation pay, all that other stuff that freelancers don't get.

Why not just ask them what the position pays? If it is too low, try to negotiate but as Barry said, there is a line of qualified people behind you that will work for peanuts. It is an unfortunate reality in our business right now.

Freelance hourly rates are always going to be significantly higher then a salaried employees.

Cheers

Hehe... for $150K, no sales, benefits and steady work, I'd go back to industrial video :)

For $150k, I'd quit my job of 36 years (with benni's), use my own equipment and work weekends!

I would negotiate a base salary, just for you. ie. What is YOUR weekly pay check for 40 hours of your time. Then add in a box rental for equipment on an as needed/used basis. For instance some days you may be using your camera equipment to shoot but the next 3 days maybe just your editing/DVD authoring gear. You cant really expect the company to pay rental on equipment that might be sitting idle for days or weeks at a time.
