Videographer Insurance?

I'm shooting a wedding and A couple asked me if I have insurance and it's something I've been meaning to get but haven't as of yet. Can anyone recommend a provider? Thanks!

I have liability from Hartford (referred to me by my homeowners policy). I think it is a must if your doing events in public places, protects you from stupid litiguous people who trip on your cords, etc.

1. Make your company an LLC before going so far to get insurance

2. I went through my Nationwide agent, and I've got $1 million in liability ($450/year) and also some insurance on my gear as well.

3. Having said that, I would ALWAYS require that the wedding party be responsible for their own guests - long story short, a local videographer was sued because some drunk guys started moshing with the tripod in hand, and someone ended up with a busted orbital. He had insurance, but not enough to cover the millionS that the court awarded the plaintiff. Fortunately, he was an LLC, so all they took was his company.

If they're asking if you have insurance, they're asking if you have "liability" insurance, not whether your cameras are protected (I saw a couple property comments here). They probably are wanting to see proof, aka Certificate of Insurance showing your limits of liability.

If this is a business (or serious hobby) then you should make sure you have adequate liability limits... some homeowner's policies will allow a limited amount of liability to be extended (if it's a hobby) maybe enhanced through an umbrella policy, but I'm sure most exclude it. It'd be best to get a separate liability policy to protect yourself and preferably organize as an LLC. If anything 'negative' happens because of your presence, you can obviously be sued. And if the bride thinks you screwed up on the footage (or lack thereof) you can be sued. It's best to be protected with high limits, especially nowadaze. It's not that expensive and it's a write-off. Hopefully I won't be doing weddings anytime soon, or at all, ha! I am not your competition. :Þ

I've got 25k in coverage for $500 a year through State Farm.

ditto that. i think i have $20K equipment coverage, but that's renters as well as business. it's covered if someone steals something out of my house as well as if something "walks away" during a shoot. i think there is also $100K accident insurance as well. ie someone trips on a cable or something.

Hopefully I won't be doing weddings anytime soon, or at all, ha!

ditto that too. i have 5 more to go this year. booooo. but, bought tons of awesome gear with wedding money this year. yeaaaaaa.

I think WEVA offers insurance for event/ wedding videographers.
As far as actually being sued for what you get or don't get in the footage, a contract should help with that. My contract, and many I've seen, include wording that the videographer is only liable for any monies that have been paid to him/her by the clients or a portion thereof. If you've paid me $500.00, that's all I'm obligated to pay back.

Your state probably has an on-line form that you need to fill out. In Ohio, they keep it on the Business Gateway site, and the form filing fee is a one-time $125.

Here's a popular site for filing your own LLC http://www.legalzoom.com/sem/incorp...=GO871843087&gclid=CLulgvOzkJUCFQ8QagodWXCTPA

Of course it's recommended that you use a 'real' lawyer, but a lot of people are do-it-your-selfers. Each State has a different licensing fee... in California it's insane, it's like a thousand bucks a year just to have an LLC. Many States are a tiny fraction of that, if any onging fee at all. There's usually also a one-time filing fee, besides the lawyer set-up fees. If you're making money in your business then it's relatively inexpensive, but if you're starting from scratch it's an owwy.

I'm probably going to set up an LLC, but I'm interested to know whether you CAN get liability insurance without setting up any kind of business.

Also, if I set up an LLC, do I need to set up a bank account for it? Or would it be easier to still have clients write out payments to my name? I'm a bit confused about how I would handle the money that's coming in for the company (it's just me, doing freelance videography and editing).
