Exposure room is still transcoding so if the link to the video review isn't working just yet give it a little bit of time and it will be there!!

DVXuser chaps we able to have a JVC sub forum at all? With this and the new 100 there will be a lot of interest in the JVC line.

Thanks!

Phil

Thanks for the review! I've been waiting for a while to see one and to get our demo unit.

New JVC sub forum would be great!
:) I mentioned it a few times to our Admin Jason this month , but it looks like he is busy.

Thanks Philip,

A couple of questions...

How would you compare the sharpness vs. the HPX170 that you recently reviewed?

I like the fact that you can buy this camera without a lens. I'm looking at one for dramatic film and I'd be interested to see if a Letus 1/3 relay materalizes. I'm thinking this with a Letus relay/adapter combo might be a great filmmaking cam. Do you agree and would this combo be faster than an actual zoom lens?

Cheers,

Mark

Thank you Philip, as I expected one solid camera, love the footage... Direct competitor to EX3...(Unique as it is pretty much the only 1/3" CCD camcorder with removable lens)

It's better than KxS ecking as it lets you overcrank onto SD cards.

I would say the JVC is definitely sharper than the HPX170, very different cameras though...

Am hoping to try out a 100 soon.

I don't think a relay and letus and 35mm lens will be faster than the stock lens. It is a good camera for 35mm adaptors, especially ones that don't have flips as it can flip in cameras. But the low light will make things a bit trickier.

The relay that comes out for it will also fit the Panasonic HPX 300/301

Phil

Thats not true, but its one of the only ones aimed at the ex3. KxS is built in!

I think the GY-HM700 is aimed more towards the HPX-300 than the EX3.

JVC 700: 1/3" CCDs (not 1/3" CMOS) and inexpensive media (over P2), .mov recording (fastest workflow for FCP) / MP4 capable recording.
Not debating on which camera is better. Theres definitely a market for this camera.

Can the .mov files created by this new cam be used in other NLEs like Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 (Mac version)? I really dig the HM700 and especially its ability to record onto SDHC cards like the HMC150, but as I don't use Final Cut Pro, would I have to render all the files when using another NLE?

am not certain but can't Premiere take .mov? Avid can't. You have a mac and no FCP?! ;-)

Hi, is there any other 1/3" CCD & removable & 1920x1080 camcorder available I am not aware of? Thanks.

The JVC isn't full HD, the only camera with native full HD recording and 1/3" chips is the Panasonic. The EX3 is 1/2" native full hd recording, the JVC is 720p "upscaled".

Philip,

Separately, what is your opinion of JVC as a company. Puredrifting said about a month ago you'd be crazy to buy a JVC and he's owned them. To him, they were full of problems and JVC's support was lacklustre. Would you buy a JVC?

Mark

But that is an additional cost, not sure how much it is. Quite expensive if you just want to unlock .mp4

i just spoke with our JVC account manager on a few issues.
You will need the adapter to unlock .mp4 files.
In the USA, its $500 more to get the adapter ( when you buy the package ).

In you review Phillip, you probably have the Fuji 16x lens when your talking about the purple fringing? In the U.S. its the Fujinon Th17x5BRM Lens. I don't know if there is a quality difference between those lenses, but I know its a newer lens. The chromatic aberration issue might be fixed on the 17x lens.

You originally said 1/3", not that the sensor had to be 1920x1080. That's why I sai that. The XL-H1 series is a 1/3 removable lens, the sony z7 and s270 are 1/3" removable lens as well. Obviously very different cameras, but I was just sayin'.

Haha, nope, I've been a premiere user for a long time and when I bought a macbook pro 2 years ago, I instantly bough the full Adobe suite. Since I'm a heavy user of After Effects and love the PPro-Photoshop-AE workflow without having to buy extra plugins, I see no reason to switch even if I like Final Cut. For what I do, PPro's enough :)

Since PPro CS3 and CS4 (mac versions) uses native .mov files, would that automatically mean the JVC's mov would work as well as it should in Final Cut Pro?
