Video Production as a Career: Guidance needed

Looking for a bit of guidance as to what to do next in my career.

I'd like to get into the video production business (full time), but have had a hard time finding work even as a PA. I never went to film or broadcast school, but going into that much debt for me is not an option. I do on the other hand have experience shooting freelance. I'm also the Media Director at my church (paid position), so I have experience there. I'm really at my whits end looking for production related work.

The logical next step I suppose would be to light and shoot some interviews, and edit them to tell a story. This is kind of the basis of most video production work, so I imagine doing so would help my portfolio.

If any of you would care to impart some wisdom, it would be greatly appreciated.

Video production is a pretty broad field, I would suggest you try to zero in on what drives you the most and try to develop an identity there. The festival circuit isn't what it used to be, but it's still a pretty decent place to make connections ans build some street cred. Also - are you thinking of going out on your own or landing a position somewhere?
 
Not sure where you live, but your chances of success increase exponentially with your proximity to the places that have the most work.

I've been hoping for a full time job, but it looks like I might have a better chance of finding work as a freelancer. I've always kind of presented myself as a one man show, mostly because that's the only way I could get a demo reel out - by doing all the work myself.

I would suggest you to start doing video production service for corporate or business people, because corporate videos have become very popular as they are a great way to advertise one’s business.
