Video Noise

I got some clips that look good in the Viewer window but when I added them to the time line you see all these lines going through the picture. I do NOT see that in the Viewer window though. What could be causing the noise? I tried several different clips and they all did the same thing.

Re: Video Noise

Moving lines? Like waves through the picture?

Or scan lines, like actual lines missing but static on screen?

Or drop outs, like momentary random loss of lines?

Re: Video Noise

its a mix between scan lines and moving lines it almost looks like an effect in a way. The rest of my clips are clean but I do have some with those lines in them.

Re: Video Noise

Are those clips digital or analog origin? If the problem is isolated to specific clips, then the problem is obviously in those clips...either how they were recorded, captured, or processed.

Re: Video Noise

the clips are excerpts from projects that I saved as Self Contained Movie Files. Now I for some of those shots, I added a strobe filter and that helped to sort of smooth out the lines...you don't notice them at all with that filter attached to the clip.

Re: Video Noise

Well, that puzzles me. It's difficult to understand exactly what this might look like or what might be causing it.

I assume the clips when in the original projects didn't do this? If they didn't, then exporting them as self contained movie files should have done anything to alter the appearance of the files, unless you had a filter on the clips or used some setting for export other then standard QT NTSC DV.

I'm puzzled, sorry I can't help more.

Re: Video Noise

Yea I am not sure. All I know is I opened the folder on my External drive that holds the finished projects. I clicked one and it opened in its own window within FCP. I set my in points and out points in that particular window then dragged that over to the browser. I repeated this for all the clips I needed from finished projects. Oh 1 thing I noticed today is that I ONLY see those weird lines when there is some sort of movement with the camera. For example I have some "Survivor" Speed ramp shots. The part of the clip that is slow is fine, but when it gets to the part that is sped up, that is where I see the lines.

Does this make any sense?

Re: Video Noise

Okay...not saying this is the cause...but for example, if you had a very subtle noise pattern in your video footage, say...a slight and very slow ground loop...that noise would be very noticable when sped up.

Is there a posability that this noise is in the clips normally, but shows much slower?

It sounds like it could be a ground loop to me, but I'm just guessing. Is the footage associated with those clips from a DV camera? Was it captured analog or digital?

Re: Video Noise

captured by FW from the DVX100..the footage was all shot on the DVX100.

Anyway I solved the mystery. I took the strobe filters off that I placed on those clips yesterday and replaced that with a Gaussain Blur filter and adjusted it down to 1. The clips look normal again and you don't see the lines anymore on those clips with movement.
