VIDEO: NAB 2012 - Philips/Strand Lighting

I saw the LED's don't look diffused, so will there be the multishadow issues with this one and what was the cri rating...though it appears the color temp is adjustable...what about green? Thanks!
 
60W. So what does that translate to in the tungsten world? I miss the days of having a rough understanding of what wattage outputs mean in the real world.
 
We didn't notice any multi-shadow issues, but there were also a lot of other lights in the booth, so we may not have seen it. The CRI was in the 90s (we think), but we don't have a hard number for you, and it may change for the better when the lights officially ship.

Best of all, we saw zero green spike with these fixtures.
 
Yes I can deal with the price if it puts out light somewhere near a kino deva 400? Though you can buy 3 of those Philips for one of the kino celebs.
 
I get really frustrated by manufacturers quoting LED power consumption as if it meant something! They tell us about the features, the accessories the tiny adjustments but if you were going to buy a light source, for the last umpteen years the key feature has been brightness! Do we buy 300, 650, 1000 or even 2K so we can match the equipment to the job - but now we're beaten to death with features on everything except how bright the damn things are.

If they were honest and open, they would tell us what they would replace. So if they make something that replaces a 1K soft light, then tell us. Fair enough, if you are starting from scratch, and buying all LED it's not so important with modern cameras, but plenty of customers will be looking to purchase LED to replace tungsten they already have, and it is almost impossible to determine if the new clever products are a match, or not?

The new lights are light, being made from plastic and have a decent feature set - and these are not even hugely expensive - but would somebody please tell me what they will replace in the studio, or on location. I keep asking myself why Arri and others made products in a range of brightnesses, because the obvious answer is that they were needed. Does anybody market two different LEDs at different brightnesses? They all seem to make products as bright as this months technology can manage.

Sometimes there are brightness specs, but they don't use the same units or measurement style we used before. It would be so nice to have somebody with a light meter around.
 
LED efficacy is coming up very quickly. We saw products this year with 10:1 power / output. A couple years ago, you were seeing 5:1 or so. 90W emitter gets you just under 1K equivalent output. Philips isn't a newcomer to LED. They have a best-in-class reputation for color rendering, output and, very importantly, ongoing support for their products. We were told that this panel is already getting fitted for AB and V type battery options. I also let them know that users would be interested in an inexpensive option for mounting grips to those rod mounts.

There are a lot of nice things in this design. Its flat on the back (where some have knobs which stick up) so less likely to have the knobs damaged.
