VIDEO: NAB 2012 - Cool Lights

Do these NAB videos that take 3-5 minutes to give you information that, in text format, would take 15 seconds to absorb, drive anyone else crazy?

Good stuff Richard... Always good to see site sponsors. Look forward to seeing the new products.

Sounds great. I've got a couple of Richard's CDM150s in transit at the moment, the 400w sounds very interesting, as do higher CRI LEDs.

Hope that ring light comes in bi-colour like the 1200 - They've become my take everywhere light.

Yes, especially when they don't show you any product, just a talking head.

I have 3 x 600's from Coolights. Was never crazy about the lighting quality even with the minus-green. Only room for one filter screen. So this is great news on CRI, and hope it's pushed as high as possible on the new lights. One thing which really needs an upgrade is an overall build quality of these products and the use of higher strength aluminum, more generally robust enclosures, and a better build quality for the interior components as well. All kinds of problems with denting, handles which bent or pushed in, lights landing in NA with damage before they used. Better packing arrangements/design a must, as these products get bounced around alot on their way from China. Great lights on the innovation side and the best entry level price there is for LED's on the market. But it sounds like Richard has re-designed the whole line from the ground up and I am sure he's aware of the need for these upgrades to the overall line. The 150's CDM's are temperamental but nice light. My favs which he offers. The new light line sounds fantastic.

Do you remember when you bought a product, and it remained in production long enough to buy more? Now because LED is evolving faster and faster, last years products are used to compare with this years - so they're brighter, have better CRI, possibly cheaper etc etc - but the people who bought last year no doubt feel a bit miffed! You buy something that is out of date, perhaps before you've even paid for it, if you borrow the money to buy? It's not the fault of the manufacturers, but Arri have designed their new LED with a swappable light engine so you can update it to the latest one without scrapping the entire thing. So the selling feature is based on the fact that what you are buying will have a very short lifespan (or be severely outdated and unmatchable).

If you invest in LED, then how does your accountant feel about investment in short lifespan (asset value wise) plant? It also means that hire companies have to get their investment back quicker, making rental prices higher. The rapid development also makes buying more difficult. You buy two, and then try to buy another next year to find out your two are dimmer and have worse quality of light than the new one - so you end up with a real mixture. I hate it. I have 12 LEDs of one type in stock, 10 are identical, two are replacements for faulty units, and both don't match the originals, as LED batches changed. I have one big Mole Fresnel that is 30 years old, and a newish pair of Arri 1ks - these three, 30 years apart blend well together - you can't do that with LEDs after just 1 year!
