Video interview: Doing a film out

Hi All,

I've been working on a short book for the student/newbie filmmaker who buys a camera like the DVX100 or XL2. For the book's DVD, I interviewed several friends who are working in 24p as filmmakers (got films into Sundance and AFI), editors (one who worked at ILM and now Tippet studios), members of the Final Cut team, etc... That's the shameless plug for my book, but I am posting 5-10 minute segments from the DVD on my blog for those who are interested. The clips are in Flash Video since that's the easiest way for me to include video on my WordPress blog and because I work for Macromedia. (OK, second shameless plug, but hey, I have a baby girl to feed and an HVX200 to save up for! ;).

The post I'm going to do this week is an excerpt from my interview with Eric Escobar. He has had two films accepted into Sundance and is a finalist for the screen writers lab. He teaches film at SF State too. Anyway, I thought he was a gold mine of advice. He's a bit zany, but very eloquent. Some of the things he discusses:

* How he did film out tests, what he learned from it, and how he made adjustments
* How shot on the Varicam and color corrected using After Effects and eLin
* The Cineon file format and how he did a complete Digital Intermediate process on his G5 computer
* Some things to avoid when shooting DV for a film out
* How he made the most of the Varicam’s native 960 × 720 resolution for a film out

Enjoy! I'm going to post his D-I workflow next week when I'm back.

John
