Video hits/hickups in FCP 4.5????

I'm finding random video hits in some of my video clips when playing back. Each time I start up the project it tends to happen in a different video clip in the Timeline. I've found re-connecting the media takes care of it for the time being, but that doesn't keep it from happening again arbitrarily in other clips. Using a Dual 1.25 G4 this time in the 10.3.8 OS. All the footage is stored on an external 250 GB Lacie. Please help.
 
Is there anything else connected to the firewire ports? Suspect there may be some conjestion.
Do you have plenty of local disk space and memory?
 
There is nothing else connected to the firewire ports. I have about 5 GB on the main hardrive and the memory is maxed out on the system at 2GB.
