Video Glasses

Has anybody ever seen these glasses in person? Are they worth the money? Apparently they say you can watch a movie from your ipod or portable dvd player or whatever and it will look like your watching it on a 50" screen from several feet away. The glasses themselves look hideous but I have seen others on the market that look better. I am thinking of getting some to use on some trips where I will be flying.

keeping your eyes focused on something so close is not only painful but probably damaging too. put your hand 2 inches from your face and focus on it, hurts after 5 seconds.

oh and :

I played with an off-brand version of these at a higher-end electronics place a few years ago. They did give me a headache, and pretty fast. A shame too, because they're a cool idea.

It looks like you're dealing with a "virtual" focus far away from your eyes. Otherwise, the image would be tiny and out of focus. They had some cool prototypes years ago that projected an image directly on your retina.

This is another one of those freaky Startrek-seeping-into-the-mainstream type deals that scares the bejeezus out of me. Cops will be carrying standard issue phazers any day now...and ill be hiding under my bed...

Actually I bought a pair of these in 1993. Yes, that long ago, when they first came out. Loved them with my S-VIDEO LASERDISC player. However, ended up returning them after a month. Does weird stuff with your eyes and I don't think they are too healthy. The principle of having moving images that close to your eyes is scary. I can't describe the side effects but it was enough to make me return them.

I saw a pair of these 2 months ago for the first time when I was travelling and perusing an issue of SKYMALL.

I LOVE the idea. Personally, It seems to follow the same optical illusion-concept as a ViewFinder. I can totally see how it would appear you are watching a film on a 70" screen. Though not trying it out in person I can see it must have its limitations....

Having said that...how cool would it be for getting a long attachment from these glasses to your DVX at the end of the crane to monitor what your cam it viewing?

Seems like a real nifty workflow...

Here's my two cents: The glasses are placed on your head, the image is stationary, yes, but your head is constantly moving. Your equilibrium, the liquid inside of your inner ear that makes sure you know you are level headed, will work on a fixed object like a tv when your eyes are free to move about and feed your brain the necessary data that tells it your not upside down or whatever. Like motion sickness or sea sickness, unless your eyes have something fixed into position to grab on to like the horizon, then your going to get sick. So when you have these glasses on, and you look to the side suddenly, your probably going to experience nausea and or vertigo.
I tried these at Disney's Innovations and was sick for the rest of the day. In the Merchant Marine I learned why and I am explaining it here for what it's worth. Unless you plan on putting them on and not moving your head for 2 hours in the slightest.. well, prepare to attach a vomit bag to your face along with the glasses.
Cheers.

The retina scanning idea is awesome. I remember hearing about that years ago. I believe they actually use it in some fighter aircraft these days. Makes for a nice heads up display that follows you around wherever you look.

they need to make a 720p one.... then i will use it as a viewfinder for my HVX.....

Well I recently won those glasses on Ebay. I tried them out last night and it actually is a cool concept HOWEVER, I am in the same boat as many of you in terms of wanting to return them. I may just put them back on Ebay in a few days. Watching video with the glasses didn't give me any kind of headache. The kind I got, works mainly with a Video iPod or portable DVD player among other things. Now video on my iPod looks a lot better than it does with those glasses on! Another thing that bothered me is that the glasses are front heavy which puts pressure on your nose and makes it uncomfortable to wear after just a few minutes or so. The little ear buds that are attached to the arms of the glasses kept popping out of my ear and the audio didn't sound like it does when I normally listen to my iPod...sounded like it was mono or something. On Ebay the ad said you could watch your video like your looking at a 50" screen. Well in the instructions booklet it mentioned that it was 37 inches! The image is 4X3 and not 16:9 as well! It did come with a mask to block out all light from entering the glasses/eyes so it would be like your sitting alone in a home theater or something.

This kinda sucks because I am going to be flying to Puerto Rico in a couple of weeks and wanted to use the glasses but I am going to end up selling them.

Well mine came with several adapters so I guess you could run a cable from your DVX or HVX camera (if its on a Crane) and you could connect your glasses and see what the camera sees that is if you didnt have a monitor set up already.

Hey glimmer, where did you work? I've got my 1600/3000 ITC mate and use to run anchor boats in the GOM.
