Video for Audio

I know that most mixers on bigger productions have a video monitor. I was wondering how they get signal to it?

All depends on the level of production of course.
Most pro level video monitors have a loop thru so you can come out of the "output" after
the main video/client monitor. You have to be careful sometimes though, by coming out
of the loop thru you can actually degrade the signal of the "main" monitor.

Bigger productions are going to have a dept called "video assist"
who takes care of client monitors and can also record "takes" to be able to play them back
for the clients/director without having to play back directly from the camera.
You can usually get a feed from them.
Also when there is a video assist dept its usually the sound dept's responsibility
to get an audio feed to video assist so they can record the audio/video together.

Another very common thing on film shoots is the use of wireless video.
These units are usually directly mounted on the camera and work in the UHF band.
When these are used, any and all dept's can get their own feed with any ol'
portable tv. (that has a built in tuner).
Usually these signals aren't as good but are fine for frame lines (which is all the sound dept needs a monitor for)

Low/No-budget video feed...

Low/No-budget video feed...

I put together a very inexpensive ($100) setup using these items:
Speco Wireless 4 Channel CCTV Receiver : WR-2501
(http://www.altex.com/Product3.aspx?ProductId=141526)
Speco Wireless 4 Channel CCTV Transmitter : WT-2500
(http://www.altex.com/Product3.aspx?ProductId=141527)

You can power the transmitter from a 9v battery, but the ideal is 12v. The transmitter has a power through-put, so you can run power from some camera's. The Receiver works on 8v, so that can be a problem- I use a DC-DC voltage converter (from Radio Shack) on my cart's 12v battery system.

I was searching around & found this system for $57.49: http://tinyurl.com/2665cy6... While it looks like the kit I bought, with the same transmitter, I haven't used it.

I also found a 7" TFT LCD 2.4GHz wireless AV monitor for $95: http://tinyurl.com/2e3pknf. I'm wishing I had found this before buying the receiver above & a Haier 7" TV, since this would have eliminated the extra receiver & powering needs!

Thanks, I got a monitor that will work for my needs now, and able to turn into a mobile computer monitor in the future. But, I want to make sure I don't buy anything that won't transfer into the future (for the bigger jobs that will hopefully come later).

Thanks!
