Video Filters Used?

Curious what, if any, types of filters in Final Cut you guys use in post to add to or make your project look better?

I recently put a 50% desaturate on a project, and to me it gave it a better "film-ish" look. I've also used Sephia Cyan at like 4 for night shots to add a "blu-ish moon like hue, and Sephia Black at 50% to age the look.

Got any filters you like to use?

Re: Video Filters Used?

I have used a bunch of those filters for different effects but I am still learning the Color Corrector filters. I added a Color Corrector filter to my last project and I didn't see a difference. Are they any books or websites that discuss color correction filters?

How do you make your color video black and white?

Re: Video Filters Used?

You can make black and white several different ways. Try Tint, Desaturation, Sephia, you can achieve it using any of these filters. Probably know this... but when you apply a filter, you double click the clip, and in the viewer window on top you'll see video, audio, filters, motion. Click on filters, you can play with them and adjust to make it how you like, ie. 100% Desaturation is black and white. Coolest one I think is Sephia. Play around with the different color choices on it, you'll find alternatives to black and white you might like. ps - there are probably other ways to achieve black and white also, just can't think of them off top of head.

As for color correction. I personally use RGB Balance instead. To me it works the same as 3 way color corrector, but you can move each color individually and find what you are looking to achieve.

I've found that another way of creating black and white video is to combine the desaturate filter with "arithmetic" filter under the "channel" submenu. If you apply one or multiple "arithmetic" filters and then apply the desaturate filter you can create some wonderful black and white images. I would suggest setting the arithmetic filter to Operator: Subtract and then Channel to either Red, Green, or Blue. But don't limit yourself to this. Add your desaturate filter at the end of the line of filters and then go back up and play with your arithmetic filter settings.

I learned this from working with Photoshop and trying to create some very strong B&W photos from color photos. You can create some wonderful images by dropping a channel or two and then desaturating the image.

I hope this gives you some good ideas on how to handle those clips in the future.

You don't just drop in a color-correction filter and expect the look to change. The CC filter gives you the ability to change the color. Open the filters tab of the clip to which you applied the filter, then play with the settings. If you used the FCP 3-way, click the f-color corrector-3way tab and you'll see a blacks, mids and whites wheel, along with saturation slider and more options below. Play with these until you achieve the coloring you want.

Understand, the CC filter is intended to give you control over the overall color of each clip you use in your movie, so that you can match them and bring continuity. There are other filters that are better at giving a clip a certain 'look', although CC will allow you to do that as well.

apple pro training series advanced editing and finishing techniques in final cut pro4 is a great book to get some color correction knowledge. it was written by the guys over at digital film tree. the book also has lots of great stuff on motion effects, audio, titling, project management, and working with film and 24p. btw i have nothing to do with apple or digital film tree , i just got more out of this book than any other fcp book
