Video Effects

I want to apply a video effects in Premiere. Say, a person is in front of a background and I want to apply video effect only to the background. Is this possible, if so please let me know evey other ways immediately.

Thanx!!!

u can shoot two versions, a clean plate and a green screen. Or you can use after effects and rotoscope the person out frame by frame and aply effect to the background.

Thank You very much friend,
I tried the rotoscope method and it was ok. Thanx.
The first option does truly work well.
Is there a method to do it in Premiere itself without moving to AE.

use cropping and follow the subject you want out of the image.

works perfectly if you shot the blank plate cleanly

To do it in Premiere, simply apply a Garbage Matte (it's an effect in the Keying folder) to the video with the foreground in it. Put the foreground and the background video on top of each other, foreground on top. Now apply whatever effects you want to the background. Go back to the foreground video and select the garbage matte effect and you'll see it appears in the preview window in the form of points (if you used a 4 point matte there'll be 4 points, 8 point matte there's 8 points and so on). By moving these points you can adjust the shape of the mask. Adjust the mask (keyframe if necessary) so that it covers only your foreground and the background video will show up. It's basically a simpler version of rotoscoping and how well it works depends on your footage.

The only thing I don't like about this method is that I can't figure out how to feather the edges of the garbage matte so that the harsh edges doesn't show up. Anyone know how to do this?

sorry, i was being vauge, lol. I take it for granted that ppl know their way around premiere, lol. But yah what Jade says :D

thanx for the advice.
with gabbage matte the accuracy really depends on the footage as u said. I really feel that to obtain the best results Blue screen keying or rotoscoping would be the most suitable.
Thanx Guys.
