Video Editing Laptop

My name is A. Stahler. I am 17 years old. I am a student in high school. My parents have been spending too much money on video editing programs and recently the panasonic ag dvx100a. They have spent sooo much money on all this stuff for me because i love doing this stuff it's just a talent i have and i'm only 17. I've been using this dell computer to edit but it doesnt meet my needs. It's extremely frustrating to edit projects and then have your computer freeze or turn off. I was begging them to get me a real video editing laptop but they refuse. I am in need. If anyone can help or knows somebody or some way that would be so appreciative. Thank you for all your help throughout the site. Good luck to all!

i don't get what you're asking.

i worked during the summer to buy the parts to build my pc. if you love film enough, then you should work as hard as you can to acquire the hardware by any legal means necessary. you got time, you're 17. get a job where you can hone your storytelling craft while you work. that's my best recommendation.

In my experience, laptops aren't such a good idea for video editing. You're better off building your own desktop video editing workstation, not to mention it'd be cheaper than buying a laptop.

the only real benefit to laptop editing is the ability to edit in the field. i have been doing film / tv for quite a while and i have yet to find a situation where this is absolutely necessary... to keep cost down just do lots of research and build a great desktop non-linear edit system. in the long run you'll find its more useful, cost efficient and far more upgradeable...

Ditto to all the replies here. In addition, I got a great piece of advice from a mentor about 20 years ago, and it's as true today as it was then: 'Don't get too hung up on the hardware. They're merely our industry's equivalent of a carpenter's hammer and saw. Work on honing your skills as a craftsman first.'

That being said, take the most cost-efficient approach to the tasks at hand. Unless you absolutely need to edit in the field because of deadlines or clients (which at 17 years old typically doesn't happen all that much - if at all), build and reconfigure a desktop system as needed.

You really are very fortunate and have parents to support you and to have already bought you the DVX100. Now I would suggest build up you skills and learn the use of the camera and its functions in and out. Most of us got our cameras in our 20s & 30's. You will be at the much better stage after a couple of years handling the DVX. I would suggest upgrade the PC if it is upgradeable, if not try to learn in camera editing, by which I mean, you shoot only what you want, believe me this will be tremendously helpful. Just imagine as you are shooting on film, as in 16/35mm film, and that you will have to spend hundreds of dollars in developing and editing it old style..... with this in mind...you will learn to conserve your tape and to imagine your shots before shooting. As most of the experienced advisers above have rightly suggested ...hardware is just a tool...use it the best possible way. Good Luck!!

Why is your Dell freezing up? Seems like updating everything and getting your system stable wouldn't cost much if anything, unless you are saying Dell is more than 5 years old and running Windows ME. You might even learn something.

Hi! My name is Joe, I am 28 years old. My parents don't buy me anything anymore and I am also in need of new equipment. Is there someone out there who will buy it for me?:engel017: I'll be your arm candy if you'll be my sugar daddy!
