Video "crackle" when capturing

I asked before but got no responses so I don't know if my question was unclear or there is no answer. Any insight or help is greatly appreciated though.

When I captured my video, some clips have a video glitch, or pop, or crackle (in fact there is always an audible "crackle" when it happens). I'm not sure what the correect term for it is but it is little squares popping on a frame. What can I do to remove these?

I try recaturing and sometimes get lucky and it doesn't pop. But other times I recapture over and over and it still happens. I don't believe it is the source material because they occur at different times and in different places on the frame.

Is my question clear? Is there anything I can do? ANY help is appreciated as I have a 105 minute project and I can't spend the next 10 years of my life hoping to get each recapture. I'm begging for insight and help.

It sounds like your system is having a hard time keeping up. Do you have an older system? Are you capturing to your system drive instead of a dedicated media drive?

I am capturing to my system drive. I bought the machine new back in March(ish) so it should be pretty strong. It is a 3.2 gHz with 512 RAM running XP. Would more RAM help? Or would capturing everything to an external drive help?

It's generally recommended that you use a different drive than the one your OS is on, though I got by with one hard drive for a couple years. Your system sounds fine for Vegas. Maybe see if you can borrow someone's external drive and see if it helps.

I'm having a similar problem to you engnorway, are you capturing from the DVX or another deck? I'm capturing DVX footage from a Sony handicam and everything has been alright until the last couple of days. Maybe you can try cleaning the heads on your capture deck or re-route your firewire cable so it doesn't pass by too many things generating a current.

I'm capturing directly from my DVX and the firewire goes into the front of my machine so it isn't crossing any wires so I don't think that is the issue. However, does it make a difference if the DVX is powered by a battery? I'm plugging it into the wall right now so I don't have to worry about the battery running down mid capture.

I bought an external HD last night and it will arrive Friday so I'm hoping that will help. I will also probably get some more memory to put me at least over 1G. I'll let you all know if that solves the problem.

Thanks and if anybody else has insight let me know.

Try the rear firewire port(s). That’s often recommended, as it’s hardwired to the motherboard, whereas the front firewire ports are often plugins.

I don't think I've ever heard that before. Thanks for the tip. I've been going through one of my front ports. I haven't had any problems, but that's good to know.
