It sucks when it comes down to nothing more than a popularity contest. If you're actually planning on putting any time or effort into an entry (casting, lighting, editing, music, etc...), but don't have 10,000 facebook friends, it's not even worth it, because you won't win. Even if you're more deserving.
I guess to each their own, but all the equipment in the world means nothing without the talent to back it up.
