Vid Rate Problems -- The Endless 24fps Battle

So I'm editing through my 60+ hrs of footage on the feature I'm working on. I shot everything 26pA (scene file 6) and captured it all with the 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal. My sequence setting is at 23.98fps so my timeline is correct. Also, I've removed every clip's anamorphic setting as I edit without it to avoid rendering every clip dropped on the timeline, then I just anamorphic my entire completed sequence. So, all is good, everything is flowing nicely.
Then, I drop a random clip on the timeline and Shazam -- the dreaded red line. How could this be? Why? So I scroll through all the settings in the browser until I hit it -- the video rate on that clip is set to 29.97! So I open up all my bins and to my dismay there are scattered imports throughout that are set at 29.97fps. How could this be if I brought everything in together through log & capture with the 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal on the "DV NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced 2:3:3:2 Pulldown Removal" setting? So, does this mean I have to re-import all those clips because their pulldown wasn't removed? In all honesty, they look fine, but that 29.97 video rate is not cool.
So, anyone with any knowledge or previous experience, your input would be much obliged prior to hours and hours of re-importing. Thank god for the clip setting option so I can just re-import with the identical timecode and then use the timecode to re-match what's already been edited, but it still sounds like a good ol' fashion pain in my ass.

You can remove pulldown after you capture as well. Select every clip and go to >tools>remove advanced pulldown, then see what happens. Not sure if it will display frame rate of 23.97 after this though. You may try to upgrade FCP if you haven't already. I had this same problem and as soon as i upgraded booyah, no more red line; for the time being at least.

Im having similar problems figured I'de just add to the thread instead of having two of these going at once.

I can't get any clips that I capture to be 23.98 they are all coming in as 29.97 and I'm using the Ken Stone guide btw im in FCP 4.5

So I tried just as a test to import in 29.97 and then convert to 23.98 with cinema tools which is giving me 23.98 framerates but with the left over interlaced frames.

Also Im using a crappy DV camera to import the fottage (I know this should not matter) but at this point im just out of ideas.

Thanks Z for the advice. I selected one of the clips that shows up 29.97 on the vid rate and tried to remove the pulldown through the tools menu as suggested. However, an Error! message came up saying "unable to find clip(s) with advanced pulldown to remove." So I guess that means the pulldown was already removed from the clip, which makes sense cause that's how I bulk captured everything?? So the only mystery left is, how can it be at 29.97 on the vid rate and force me to render on a 23.98 timeline??
msnowst9: wish I could help but we're sinking in this boat together. I will say the majority of clips I captured did come in at 23.98, it's just these random ones that came in at 29.97, so you should be able to get some working. Just go to Easy Setups and Chose "DV NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced 2:3:3:2 Pulldown Removal" and log and capture accordingly, dropping to a 23.98 sequence.

It sounds like FCP is trying to stuff the 29.97fps footage in to a 23.98 timeline which doesn't work, that is why it needs rendering. The pulldown removal isn't working. Trash your preferences and upgrade your FCP to 4.5 if you have'nt already. Here is Kens link- http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepagetrashing_fcp_prefs.html

Upgrading should definately fix this problem. By selecting 24p in easy setups you are just selecting a preset. You should double check in the audio/video settings how they are set. For 24pa your sequence settings should be > DV NTSC 48 khz - 23.98 and capture settings should be advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown removal. Sometimes you just have to double check everything twice. After upgrading you will still have your clips which you could then try to remove pulldown. If that doesn't work make those clips offline or trash them and recapture them after the upgrade.

In FCP HD 4.5 If you captured at 24pa:
1) Capture in advanced pulldown at 29.97.
2) Click on the clip in the browser. If you were to frame by frame through now, you would see that every 5th frame is interlaced.
3) With the clip open in its own window, scroll down to "Remove Advanced Pulldown" under the "Tools" menu heading. A little movie reel wil spin showing that FCP is working.
4)Now frame by frame the clip. You will see no interlaced frames. If you were to select "Analize Clip" now under the "Tools" menu, it would show the clip frame rate as 23.98.
5) Now make sure your timeline is correct. If you need to change the settings to 23.98 from 29.97 and have already been working in the timeline, you have toi change the frame rate in "Settings" under "Sequence" scroll down menu -- NOT under "Audio Video Settings" in the scroll down menu under "Final Cut Pro HD" menu scroll down.
6) now drag your clip into your 23.98n time line and you are good to go.
I assume you could do the above as a batch, but I like to check as I go.

For what it's worth

For what it's worth

I had the same experience as you, and what caused it for me was a timecode break on the tape. Check your imports, and see if there was a break - then FCP will sometimes rupture it and see it as 29.97.

Peter,

I think that's exactly whats happening to me. I'm unsure however what to do to solve it. Re-capture? Or is there some way to salvage the clip?

Thanks!
