VHX gambling

I just started using VHX and uploaded my first "product". The compression wasn't that great, even though I followed their recommended settings, so I deleted the video and re-uploaded it. This is when I found out that they don't send the hours you used back to your account after they've been used.

Maybe I don't understand financially what's involved in the process behind the scenes and what it costs for them, but it just makes uploading video into an act of gambling. I put coins into the machine and I'm not getting them back, and there's a 1 in a million chance I'll hit the jackpot but I just have to keep putting coins in until I do.

Honestly I think that's a detail worth putting in bold and not hiding it under layers of pages. I guess self distribution isn't any different than traditional distribution. Yes I should have done more research, but it's still gambling.

With every video streaming service I have ever used I have found that DESPITE their recommendations, the results are better when I upload a VERY high-res file. Like DNxHD or ProRes in full 10-bit AT LEAST.

They never mention these formats but they always work just fine.

Although I have not yet used VHX.

This is true. They're going to compress it no matter what you do. Might as well start with basically your master copy.

I hadn't heard of VHX before, Jimmy. How much content are you looking to be selling? How does VHX compare in terms of royalties to something like Vimeo On Demand?

I probably should have started with my master copy, but I wasn't sure if it would have been accepted it because of it's file size and based on every other site that you upload video to, they have size limits but not upload limits. I haven't tried VHX long enough to make a comment about royalties. I do know from research that Vimeo on Demand offers 90% return on your product. I looked at VHX because they have a buy and rental option with DRM, so it can't be distributed freely.

A rep from VHX generously put the hour back in that I had lost. They mentioned in their email that they'll make that detail more obvious. For anyone looking at VHX for self distribution, UPLOAD YOUR FINAL COPY, DON'T ASSUME IT WON'T COST YOU TO REPLACE IT IF YOU'RE NOT HAPPY WITH HOW IT LOOKS!
