VHS into VEGAS!?!?

I'm being paid to make video montages for a new resturaunt, displayed on flat screens. The owners want surfing themed, 40 minute videos, and i have beach footage on VHS.

I have my VCR running into my DVX, which displays the tape properly in the viewfinder, but vegas does not seem to recognize the signal coming into the camera, and therefore i cannot get it out.

is this even possible? to run a VCR through a DVX into Vegas for editing? or is there a digital/analog problem here that must be addressed?

if anyone has any thoughts, id greatly appreciate it. this is my first paying gig and id hate to lose it because i wasnt tech savy enough to jump over the hurddles.

...or you can record to the DVX's tape and then capture into Vegas. One extra step but if it works...

thanks guys.

unchecking the device control allowed me to at least start capturing, but it still wasnt recieveing any of the images from the VCR.

looks like ill be using Jeffro's one extra step.

thanks again

But you're limiting yourself to VHS's crappy quality. Of course, if this is 'video wallpaper' as opposed to something people will sit and watch carefully, put a nice blur on it and it may be fine for the purpose

I used to use my DVX as a pass-through quite often: VHS tapes played back via a VCR into the component input in the DVX, then out through the Firewire output into my computer for direct-to-hard-disk recording with WinDV. If you're having trouble with capturing in Vegas, download WinDV and try it that way, instead of recording to DV tape and doubling your workflow.

"Composite," not "component." That said, S-Video is better if your VCR has the option.

Don't forget to hook up the sound, too . . . :)
