Re: vhf or uhf whats the difference

VHF stands for Very High Frequency, while UHF is Ultra High Frequency. Which one you use depends largely on what other kind of equipment you have that could interfere with the specific frequency range of either. Loosely put, VHF operates between 30 and 300 MHz, while UHF ranges from 300MHz to 3.0 GHz. However, each product will be assigned a different subdivision of a frequency (say, 278.72 MHz). As a general rule, VHF has a longer range, but UHF can transmit through metallic objects better. With line-of-sight, you shouldn't have any problems with either.

Re: vhf or uhf whats the difference

VHF = cheaper, UHF = more expensive. UHF diversity is typically what you want. $300 is not likely going to get you a very good system. Stretch your budget a little and get a Sennheiser Evolution 100 G2 system, should be about $500 total, you'll be much happier. That or an Audio Technica 100 series.

Re: vhf or uhf whats the difference

UHF has fewer frequency problems with other transmitters.

In other words, buy a UHF diversity system.

VHF is great man...when you're slow you can pick up fares before the intended cab driver arrives.

Which reminds me of a friend of mine who drove taxi in Toronto. Bobby was sitting in his cab outside of a large hote skimming the I Ching or some such thing when the rear door of his cab opened and some guy stuck his head in and said

"Excuse me, are you free?"

To which Bobby replied

"Of course I'm free you fool...This is a democracy!"

Then he drove away without the fair

Second hand.......so legend has it

But is there a downside to sound quality on wireless mics and another q is can you have a boom mic rigged up toa wireless transmiter that is bieng picked up by A cam and B cam thus laying a 2 synced tracks on tape. I ask the quality question because on TV i see that when a singer is performing live they generaly take the wireless mic away and hand him/her a wired mic. Tv stations could afford good wieless mics if they wanted but they seem to prefer corded ones. ANy tips?

Re: vhf or uhf whats the difference

Well, corded equipment, regardless of what it is, will always be more reliable...

You mean if we had been using corded mics when we did Godspell, we wouldn't have heard Styx sing "Lady" from the concert hall next door?

Re: vhf or uhf whats the difference

No wireless system can compete with a good XLR cord. Cables are certainly less convenient to use, and therein lies the tradeoff: drag around a cord for better audio quality, vs. broadcast through the air for easier use. However, wireless mics suffer from interference, dropout, batteries running out at inconvenient times, etc. Cords can get tripped over, caught up on stuff, or (worst case) be too short! Also, a cord that crosses a power line can pick up some nasty interference.

The general advice in doing Hollywood-style films is that wireless is used as a last resort. There are uses for wireless, certainly, but pretty much wireless should only be used when you can't get a wired mic to do the job.

Thanks . . . I was hoping for a barry slap answer! We had a shoot and that audio went straight to laptop , I just leaving the camera free to roam without worrying about cables, but I like and no need for slating to sync
