VGA -> Composite Connector

This is kind of a hybrid post, but it is more a hardware question than an FCP question..

Is anyone here using a VGA -> Composite connector? I am going to have access to a small TV that I would like to use as a Preview monitor for editing.

I am wondering if this is a route worth going? If not, what kind of hardware would you guys recommend?

I am editing on a Dual 1Ghz G4 Tower.. I have an Apple Display, so I am using the ADC connection on my grfx card, but the regular old VGA port goes unused, and I figure this would be the perfect use for it.

Any recomendations on this? And if anyone out there is doing something similar, does this work with FCP as preview monitor?

I have a setup like that, but am working through a PC on Premiere Pro. I know that it would work in Final Cut though because my school setup an editing suite that uses VGA/Composite to a monitor.

Hang on a sec, you know if you convert VGA, you just have converted VGA colorspace in a scaled resolution...it isn't an accurate feed for a preview monitor so it's really pointless to use for that purpose.

You need something more like a firewire to analog converter (like the ADC100 or similar item) if you're looking for accurate previewing.

Ya, I understand it isn't going to be 100% accurate, but I just want it more as a second monitor really... a second monitor that I will only use for editing though..

I am inheriting this little ol TV for free, so it seems like a better deal to get a VGA->Composite cable/transcoder than to buy another monitor..

But you'll get crummy quality with it. Scan-converted high-res always looks bad. And even if you use your secondary display at 640x480, it won't be pretty. And video won't look too good either. You're better off watching the video playback on your primary screen... really! I would do what J_Barnes suggested, get a bidirectional DV-Analog converter like the Canopus ADVC-110. You won't be dissapointed. Trust me.
