Very smooth

Very smooth indeed.

It would be interesting if someone on this site tried to mimic that effect. So whose going to do it? Not me! I still think it's magic.

I love that the voice over is Ron Livingston...the guy from Swingers and Office Space. I would've never noticed...

I have a friend obsessed with these HP spots right now. He's trying to duplicate the look. I'll post if he ever comes up with anything not embarrising.

it's amazing how little a "quarter million dollars" will buy these days !

Are you kidding? Did that spot actually cost $250,000.00

I mean, it's very cool but not 250K cool....damn. Two shots plus CG, maybe I'm being totally naive and it's some sort of new school "Matrix bullet time" like wierdness (remember the bullet time thing blew everyone away and it was a real trick, now it's old-hat).

That effect is madddd easy..iduno wat u guys are talking about.

all you need is a really good motion tracker and something to capture images with...once u get that...its pretty much ABC basics..if you know how use motion tracking and all that stuff.

i think 250k is a taddd much for somethin like that...you could jus sit in ur living room and do that kinda stuff...all that money...well..most of it...wasted...man..if i had 250k dollars...omg..id go buy the hottest stripper and then a new DVX. haha

$250000- $3200=$246800 She better be sizzling hot. I'd buy a new HVX200 and a cheap ho every night for the rest of my life instead. More bang for the buck...

this would be my stripper/ho

You think the total cost of this spot along with art direction and all that was that low end? Comon its HP think big

You know theres atleast 35 people on set, plus equipment rental, film, telecining, post, music, paying the ad agency to put all these people in the same room, talent, catering, transportation etc etc etc

Also the actual effect isn't as simple as some people are saying "All you need is a good motion tracker" etc etc. Now I would think (this is just hearsay and speculation) that doing all that motion tracking leaves you with a pretty flat image, then you rotate it and so on. still it looks like ****. Why? Because it doesn't have the radiosity that pictures react to light sources. That's where it gets really complex, getting it to look like picture material rather than just a rotoed screen grab thats being tracked on a white picture frame.

I've got an idea! We should do this for a DVXfest - a 30 second HP spot. Who's game?

I'm really curious if anybody can reproduce the effect... well effectively

Who do I look like, Barry? Pfft! You could always do it for fun, if somebody else did it I'd give it a shot most likely. Not on the DVX either but still...

lol ya... I'd love to see you try it. What motion exactly would you track? The frame? Go ahead...

It's just awesome 3d compositing and totally worth the investment, since it left so many people wondering how the heck they did it.

I just did a test using After Effects and the results were ok. Nothing were posting. Adding the commercial music sure helps, a lot. The music adds to the illusion more. :)

I'm going to keep experimenting with it.

Monte, your right man.
Would it be best to track the motion first and then stick on the light source or could you do it all in Lightwave? Or best in Ae?
Jp

.

.

This is a deceptively complex post-processing demonstration.

Monte is right; the images on the cards are changing reflectivity as the guy waves them around. Now, it is definately Corner Pin and motion tracking, but reflectivity on the cards has been added. Note how when Francois first puts the card behind his head, there is a slight shadow on the card from his head!

This is a set. The 'windows' on the left give a suggestion of a light source which is 'reflected' on the cards. I say it is a set for two reasons: the plants in the window look plastic, and if I were doing the post processing, I would want a consistent light environment with which to work.

Finally, the shot that probably cost more to do that all the rest is when he puts the card on the table, and a printer is left behind. Note that when he pulls his hand away, there is a reflection of a finger briefly on the left side of the printer, which was of course added later. Either the printer was already there and he framed the card around it, or it wasn't there and they are compositing in a printer. I suspect the second option is easier to do.

So, any of you special effects wizards who want to tackle this one, go ahead: you have a number of effects you've got to do to truly emulate this clip.

I found a mistake in the video!

go to second 18..and look at the frame in his right hand...when he takes it away from his face and its put towarsd the ground....its hollow again...but then when he gets up...its whole..and has a blurred picture in there....jus thought any of you should know..it might find the answer to the misterious shadows and light reflections....and the picture isnt of him...its like of a field or something...
