Update - looks like the Canon lens is faulty. I swapped the lenses on the two cameras (can't imagine why I didn't think of this before) so that the Canon macro lens was on the Canon body with no Metabones Speed Booster. I ended up with similar behaviour so I am getting a lens replacement. Thanks for everyone's help on this.
