Vegas with RED?

Does anyone know if you can use footage from the RED Camera to edit on Vegas? I use to have a HVX200 but had to use Raylight to make it work and now I have the Canon 5d mk3 and had to upgrade to Vegas 11 for that to even work. Thanks

RED .r3d files were supported natively as of Vegas 9, I think. Just drop right onto the timeline and edit.

The Canon DSLR media was supported also natively long before v11, btw. With a decent processor, I've used V9 (and I think I've even dabbled with an old workstation running v7) with Canon DSLRs quite often! On slower hardware, however, the h.264 mov files were very intensive to decode and would bog down the editor. So v11 brought some acceleration to speed up editing and make memory more efficient (much like Adobe's mercury playback engine they added for DSLR support). New versions of anything usually bring enhancements of one kind or another, but I would hardly say you "had to upgrade" to v11 for that.

Understand that the reason you needed Raylight has to do with politics between companies (Sony and Panasonic had a bit of a dispute over what should be considered a standard format for HD camera recording. It is unclear as to whether Sony refused to support them, or if Panasonic wanted to charge exorbitant licensing fees for their decoding library. I've heard rumors of both).

Aside from that one frustrating format, Vegas is usually pretty good about supporting everything else under the sun without anything extra.

I was thinking of renting a Red for a few day shoot and was wondering how much of a computer one needs for ram etc.... I have the 27" imac with the 1tb hard drive. Can't remember the ram at the moment but I think it might be 8gb. When I get home I will take a look.

Red can be edited quite nicely in Vegas. However they haven´t seem to upgrade the color science, so colors look much better in redcine than in Vegas.

No problems editing Red Scarlet in Sony Vegas 11 on a year old HP i7 laptop. AFAIK vegas 10 will handle Red One, but Vegas 11 is needed for Scarlet/Epic.
