Vegas vs other NLE.

Hi,

I just setup a PC for my video editing system. I use Pentium 4 2.6 GHz Hypertreading, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 9600Pro 128 MB, ASUS P4P800, Win XP SP1, cheap generic Firewire card, integrated SoundMax sound chip. My first NLE program that I learned is Premiere 6.0 and 6.5, but I discovered alot of limitation in term of DV capturing, video effects & transition, etc although at that time Premiere was considered as the basic standard for NLE program. After that I found Vegas 3 and soon I realized Vegas 3 is really much better than Premiere 6.x especially in "realtime preview", DV capturing, etc. Premiere 6 can only be better if it is complemented by hardware solution such as Matrox, Canopus, Pinnacle but the total price is much higher than Vegas alone. And then Vegas 4 came with more feature than Vegas 3, but Adobe realized that they have to change Premiere to something different. So finally Adobe released Premiere Pro with the emphasis on "realtime preview" capability. I did some testing to compare the efficiency and usability between Vegas 4.0e and Premiere Pro for the normal basic usage. I use the same captured DV AVI file (around 230 files 8.5 GB on one tape). I loaded all the AVI to the project and I used the utility (procexp) to find the detail about the running process. Here is my result :

1. Vegas 4e
- Handles : 891
- GDI Handles : 311
- USER Handles : 160
- Memory Private Bytes : 69988 KB
- Memory Works Set : 63288 KB
So in total it took about 295 MB

2. Premiere Pro
- Handles : 1525
- GDI Handles : 1676
- USER Handles : 941
- Memory Private Bytes : 383572 KB
- Memory Works Set : 169624 KB
So in total it took about 500 - 600 MB

From this result, I can understand alot of people complaining about huge memory usage of Premiere Pro and also Premiere Pro will create Conforming Audio files that really described the huge number of handles. So it's easy for Premiere Pro to reach 1 GB just for the simple project. The things that I do really like from Vegas is the capability to set the video effect on certain clip or in the certain video track and even in the global video output (just as in the audio mixing program) which up to now I don't know how to get it on Premiere Pro. The DV capturing capability of Vegas is already good since Vegas 3 and now even with Radeon overlay capability, Vegas will show the Video output on TV monitor (through Radeon TV out) during DV capturing. To make it short I could add alot of good features of Vegas 4 compared to Premiere Pro. My wish if Sony wants to release Vegas 5, please keep up the good things of Vegas 4 and improve whatever it is necessary to make Vegas as a very solid NLE comparable or even better to what most people think Avid is the "king of NLE".
