If I'm wrong about this please correct me but Vegas 7 was released late summer 2006 while Win Vista was released (read: "delayed") to early 2007 yet Vegas 7 does not support Win Vista. Given the timing, Vegas certainly should have supported Vista. 98% of other software makers complied yet Sony did not. Combine that with the lack of support for DVC Pro I'm seriously starting to consider a Mac dedicated to FCP even though I'm still shooting SD. I don't care.
Biggest technical problem I have learned with Vista compatibility is that the Sony Media Manager (which is actually an out-of-the-box Microsoft product, "SQL Server 2000" in v6 and v7) IS NOT EVEN SUPPORTED BY MICROSOFT ON ITS OWN WINDOWS VISTA OS! So all Sony had to do was purchase distribution rights for SQL SERVER 2005 and all would have been well (or at least better). Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The biggest problem for me personally with Vegas used to be that I would never land an editor job with just Vegas skills. That might have been okay because I could always learn FCP and/or Avid if I ever thought I had a shot at getting calls. But this whole Vista/SQL Server issue thing is now really beginning to stink to me. They are solidly demonstrating that they are and likely will remain a lower-tiered product.
Although Sony runs on the windows platform, it seems they don't really feel a need to CONFORM to the advances in their chosen platform, nor do they have to support other advances in the industry (DVCPro). In fact, they feel that they can remain YEAR/S BEHIND. They have stated that there will be no Vista support until v8. That's okay. I can wait (NOT!) I could setup a dual boot with XP with little problem and at no expense and have that as a "dedicated" Vegas partition. BUT WHY? I'm pissed.
I have no doubt that FCP is compatible with OSX and vice versa. Avid and Vista? Probably. I have'nt checked. Any professional product would have to be and always will be.
Bye, bye "bush league" Vegas. I can't imagine a thing that Sony could do to lure me into another version of Vegas. Arrivaderci.
Thanks for listening and responding if inspired,
Moe
