Vegas takes an amazing amount of time to render..

I think you just answered my post. So, If I shoot in 24pa I need to capture in Vegas with Allow pulldown checked. Will this automatically do a 2:3:3:2 or a 2:3 pulldown? Orrrr does the system no that once you have checked allow pulldown, it can detect if you shot 24p or 24pa?

It's automatic. It will detect and remove either.

I think we are making things a little more confusing than they should be.
First- Vegas does not remove anything at capture, it captures the straight 29.976fps footage as 60i footage to your HD.
Second-The only reason that you should have the "do not remove pulldown" button checked is if you shot 24pn and you are editing it in a 60i timeline, and maybe want to mix it with other 60i material. If you are editing in a 24p timeline, you want to have the "do not remove pulldown" unchecked, or in otherwords, you want to remove pulldown to edit in a 24p timeline. With that button unchecked, vegas will now disipher between 24pN footage and 24pA footage, removing the appropriate pulldown. If you are editing on a 24P timeline, 24PA footage does not have to be re rendered if there are no other effects applied, Vegas is simply skipping 1 out of every 5 frames. If you are editing 24pN footage on a 24p timeline, vegas does need to re render the footage in order to remove the pulldown, it can do it on the fly if your computer is fast enough, but if you tell vegas to selectively pre render the footage, it will render all of the 24pN (un altered) footage, and will not touch the (unaltered) 24Pa footage. I hope this makes more sense.

Well, that is an important clarification -- the removal comes when you put the footage into a 24p timeline. However, if you look at the properties of a captured 24p clip (within Vegas), it will say "DV (2:3:3:2 pulldown removed)." Or, you know, 2:3 pulldown if it's 24pN. This really only means that Vegas recognizes the clip as 24p, though.

As for Vegas skipping one out of every five frames, are you sure that's correct? Why would it do that? That doesn't seem to correspond with the pulldown scheme, and if rendering from a 24p timeline, I don't see why it would need to do that anyway. Could you clarify what you mean by that?

I would have to look when I get home, I'm not in front of vegas at the moment, but basically, 24pa footage captures 4 actualy frames, and then one duplicate frame, to complete the 29.976fps NTSC requirements. basically, this duplicated frame is then dropped in your NLE, I don't know if it is every fifth frame, or how exactly it is done, but that is the jist of it. 24PA footage does not need to go though a recompression cycle in order for it to play back properly at 24fps in Vegas.

In fact, a good way to see how this works, is to bring your 24pa footage into After effects, interpret the footage and choose guess pulldown. When you start to render through your footage you will notice a green bar above the timeline. Usually this green bar will be solid if rendering through NTSC footage, but with the 24pa footage there will be gaps, (skipped frames) that appear. Basically after effects, and vegas also just play the four actual frames, skip the next one, and continue right on the the next four. It is actually almost to simple, I think that is what makes it so confusing. Of coarse I could completely be off my rocker, and just shouting jibberish that will enevitably cofuse everyone even more.

OK, I read you now. When you're saying "drop 1 out of 5 frames," you're describing pulldown removal, not rendering out. This is for it to play on a 24p timeline, not rendering out as a new AVI.

However, once the pulldown is removed and you have everything on a 24p timeline, 24p is 24p. Rendering out to a new AVI won't be affected by its original pulldown scheme. You can re-render with either 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 pulldown.

Hey Scharky, I think you got it wrong. Double negatives and stuff. The check box in Preferences says "ALLOW pulldown removal", not "do not allow pulldown removal"

Sorry about that, I was away from my computer when I wrote that. Didn't mean to confuse people any more, but basically, you want to make sure that when editing in your 24p timeline that you are allowing your pulldown to be removed. :)
