.. I dont know what thread i was talking about asking down at sony for HVx support so im posting here. you guys are probably going to be a little let down, but i went downtown for my pick-up shoot and completely forgot about stopping into SONY to ask about the support on the way back . DOH! my wife is sick and i was in a rush to get home. sorry guys, ill try to make a trip to get there early next week... but I WILL get in there.

.. i just hope when i go in they have something they can tell me. i dont see whey the wouldnt/couldnt at this point. its not like theyed be giving the compitition a new idea if it leaked.. theyed just be acknowledging they are going to play that ballgame too.

..k, i made the trip through constructionville and stopped in there today and spoke with them. of course i have to go through the proper chain of command to recieve any athoritative information on the matter. I'm currently awaiting an answer. Ill let you know what the response is.

Cool!

Sony has answered this several times on their own forums...
The Sony store won't have any sort of a clue. The Sony store sells laptops with Adobe Premiere on them, for heaven's sake. :-) Sony Media Software has said what is posted in another thread here; If you have the codec, Vegas will read/write to it. I'll be surprised if Sony licenses the codec from Panasonic this early on, as the cam isn't available, and no information as to how many sales of the camera are expected. I'm afraid you're on your own for the time being. You can always call Sony tech support and ask them the same question. 608-204-8000. I'll bet you get a very similar answer.

Yeah, I suppose it would be prudent to allow the market time to decide before devoting resources, seeing how Sony is restructuring.

hey guys,

yes.. there is word.. :) ive ben in contact with the Sony guys for a while now. im speaking with the software development manager here at sony media software HQ, and things are moving forward. after speaking with a number of people and pooling information ect ive put them in touch with the panasonic partnership manager. they are currently looking into the support and development needed. needless to say its not something that can just be instantly done. working with the naitive MXF files is just one thing for example that needs to be considered. At this time it looks like i might be dropping in there to let them work on development with my own HVX when i get it if needed pending what happens through the panasonic partnership. I will check in with them soon again and see how that is going. but they do seem very interested and eager to implement this into the software. considering their competition has already done so I dont think they are jumping the gun by working on it at this point by any means.. they are simply cathing up. they know it is the new big brother to the DVX and are familiar with the DVX and its sales #s and required support.. so while they didnt seem to know the HVX existed when i first spoke with them.. they now seem very happy to know whats going on and very eager to implement the desired features. ..anyhow.. ill keep this post updated as i can. some things are still up in the air, but rest assured i am continuing to work with them on this. becuase while you can download the avid DV100 codec for free right now and use it in premiere or vegas.. without naitive support its slow and doesnt have nealry any of the features you want for seamless workflow with P2 or the HVX. anyway .. sorry i didnt post this all earlier but like i said some things are up in the air. so im trying to just keep things moving between people, and make sure i have solid things to say before i let the whole world know.. so thats where things are right now. now im going to hush about it again and continue to work on it and give info as i have it confirmed to me. but rest assured.. the gears are still turning.. and before anyone asks about a timeline.. ill just say .. right now ..we dont know.

just keep on shooting and know that you can always use the new DVfilmmaker and the cineform codec or the avid DV100 codec to work within vegas or premiere for now if things arent ready right away. :)

Thanks for the update. It's really cool that you're making an such an impact on technology and helping out Vegas users (and probably saving Sony from losing customers as a result of being too far behind in the game). Whatever the timeline is, I think it's safe to say that a lot of Vegas users are just happy there IS a timeline. Bravo!

..well , latest update. I spoke with Jan today at the resfest in chicago, and after what she had to say, it would appear that Sony has dropped the ball at this point. the contacts have been silent on both their end and mine. cant say much more than that. all i can say is that panasonic had offered to partner and sony has been silent in reply. Jan confirmed this for me. my contacts have fallen silent on my end as well as I have tried to get some update status from them with no reply. I cant say beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are not playing ball anymore.. but anyway .. I 'll just say that it doesnt seem like they are. so 180 degrees and here we are now. well .. here vegas users are now anyway.. i dont use vegas.. anyway .. you can still download the free avid dv100 codec and use it in conjuction with aspect HD or connect HD and DVFilm's new version of DVfilmmaker to convert the MXF files to quicktimes or cineform AVI's .. then using the cineform codec or quicktime you can edit in PPRO or vegas using conect HD or aspect HD.. so the solution is there.. total cost around 600.00 or something. there is some very glimmering hope on the PPRO side of things that it will get support on its own though. .. anyway for vegas peeps. you may want to look into www.dvfilm.com and www.cineform.com to check out the solution I'm talking about. cant say much more than that right now.. but imho and Jan's it doesnt look good.. or better said.. it looks very bad.

Part of Jan's response to my question on the matter at her presentation yesterday was "It'll be a cold day ..." Not encouraging, to say the least. I had thought there was hope because of the support that Vegas had given to the DVX. Turns out that all started before Sony picked up Vegas... Maybe if Sony figures out that supporting the DVCPro formats will only help bring more users to Vegas (or keep the ones they have), and not turn people away from buying their cameras (which the people weren't going to buy anyway because they didn't want HDV) there could be some hope... Well, I can dream, can't I?? Or maybe Vegas will be sold off to a company that doesn't have an interest in camera sales...

Regardless, so far it's clear to me that I'll have to make do with workarounds to get the footage into Vegas, or switch to another NLE. Because what I saw from the HVX yesterday was just way, way, way too cool...

:thumbdown As a Vegas user I'm not surprised that Sony would put their corporate agenda ahead of the needs of their customers . They evidently intend to use Vegas to support Sony products only. That's sad because it will mean that Vegas will always be a second rate program, just a corporate after thought. We can only hope that perhaps Vegas will be picked up a company that's focused on it's customers instead of it's line of camcorders.:thumbdown

Well . . .

This is indeed discouraging. I was a little worried about the future of Vegas when Sony acquired it, and this doesn't instill me with overwhelming confidence.

However, I'm not in panic mode yet, considering the HVX isn't available yet and no one knows how it's going to perform -- functionally, and market-wise. If it's as superb as we expect, the popularity will be great, and Sony may reconsider.

But if it is, and they don't . . . though I hate -- HATE -- the thought of it, I'll most likely jump ship.

To what, I don't know.

That being said, you CAN download and use the Avid DVCPRO codecs:

renderoptions1ie.jpg

But you can only use them with clunky-clunky-slow-slow Quick(sic)time.

This is nothing intended against Panasonic, and I hate being in this position too, but even though the bulk of my ire is against Sony, I believe I might keep allegience to Vegas no matter what.....I simply cannot and do not want to imagine editing with anything else. But you can bet your ass I'll never buy a Sony HDV cam...and thats not because of my ire, but because I percieve the pseudo 24fps to be bullshit, not to mention MPEG compression. I suppose I'll just use the DVX until the end of time or until there's a change in the situation. HD or not, the DVX is still better than anything D.W. Griffith ever worked with.

I also think it shows an extreme lack of professionalism for Madison to simply not reply to Neils or Jans efforts. The least they could do is write or call back saying "Sorry, corporate told us to have no further discussion on the matter at this time".

Maybe some really good hearted people from the Sonic Foundry days will branch off and give us a new Vegas based NLE and vow never to sell out again. My god, why did they have to do something so lame as to give their soul to the devil.

I would love it if just one person their would smuggle out the sourcecode to Russia or wherever, add what we need and continue to maintain a seperate, truly underground version. Pffffffffffffffft on any notions of "But thats illegal...thats unethical".....whatever....I dont think so and my God just nodded in agreement so I'm not scared.

Yah, but what kind of MXF files? There's more than one kind.

David--Not to "rub it in" because I now (finally) acknowledge the superiority of Vegas for 24P editing. I really do. You should believe me because of my recent posts in the FCP forum lamenting Apple's half-arse support for it. It's pathetic, sad, and sorry. As the owner of two Mac's, I don't know why anyone would pick FCP for 24P editing. It's completely beyond me.

But, you know that only having the Avid DV100 codec would only make using Vegas for DVCProHD about as backwards and complex as editing 24P in FCP? It wouldn't be pretty (demuxing MXF's to get AVI's is NOT pretty!) But, you already know this.

Suffice to say, I feel for you, David.

Oh, indeed I do already know this. Which is why I want a VEGAS solution!

Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I guess from Sony's POV, it can make the argument that the HVX isn't on the market and it makes no sense to support a product which isn't, especially as there are unanswered questions about it.

But like I said, if she's all she's cracked up to be, and Sony still balks, no other conclusion can be drawn than that Sony is out to push HDV and will not support a competing format.

This would be a left turn down Stupid Street.

So, I feel for YOU, Brian. Looks like we both have reasons to be disappointed in something we otherwise love.
