Why does Vegas render slowmotion 24P so badly? I know that 24P inheriently won't be as smooth as 60i, but slowmo clips from Vegas is jerky, whereas clips rendered in Avid Xpress is plays consistent. I've tried all settings in Vegas and they all look horrible.
I don't know the specific answer, but make sure you have "allow pulldown removal" selected. If you're trying to slow down the 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 footage in a 60i timeline, it will obviously be horrible. With pulldown removal selected it should be able to work on the original frames and do as decent a job of slow-mo as any other program, but (as you already know) 24P is the worst format to try to slow down.
Hey, Barry -- just thought of something; don't have Vegas in front of me to try. What do you think the result on a 24p timeline would be if you take 24p footage WITHOUT THE PULLDOWN, as 60i, and slow it down to 40%?
Well, I do have Vegas in front of me (rendering out the FINAL SEGMENT of the DVD! WHEW!) so I can test...
Normally for the 40% figure, that's when I take 60i footage and put it on a 24P timeline, and play it back at 40%. Gives field-for-frame glass-smooth slow motion.
But 24P footage without pulldown AS 60I? Not sure what you mean there. Can you clarify?
Obviously you could take 24P footage without pulldown and play it back at 50% speed, to get the equivalent of 48fps (but it'll be kind of jerky). But I'm not sure what workflow you want me to test... spell it out and I'll run it through the timeline!
Oh, something like importing 24pN footage and editing on a 60i timeline, then exporting a standard DV AVI, 29.97, no pulldown. Taking that AVI and placing it in a 24p timeline and slowing to 40% (or season to taste).
Yes.. i'm used to editing 24P footage in AVID, but they're edited in a 60i timeline without pulldown removal, the slowmo from that is much more usable on these 24P footage in vegas with pulldown removed.
More FPS in your original footage, the better your slowmo will look, period.
Not sure about Avid, but Vegas will create "in-between" frames when you apply a velocity envelope and the clip is set to "resample". But I've never been very impressed with slow mo in Vegas.
I use RE:Vision "Twixtor" in After Effects when I need really good slo-mo from low-fps masters, it can create very accurate "in-between" frames that give a better slow-down illusion.
