Vegas studio platinum 9b rookie, advice on sound edit

Hey all, in the past you have all been incredibly helpful....so here we go again.

I have vegas studio platinum 9b build and also have sound forge 8.0 and sound forge audio studio 9.0. Shooting with hvx 200.

I am all new to this, it's my 5th short film actually ("muse") but i am a novice with vegas. I am not a sound guru, just looking for advise on sound levels and well anything i need to know about what im doing.

I live by the adage to simplify what doesnt need to be complicated. So im looking for the user friendly approach to a pro quality end result. The visual edit should be straight forward. The film is shot with very few edits. It is also a non-dialogue piece, a tragic abstract ballet if you will, with music and sfx.

That being the case i hope this simplifies the sound editing process.

Other thing is the guy i have doing the music. I assume i should do the visual edit first and get him to sort of time the music? and then what format should i receive it in.....also advise on rendering.

We have a few options on format.......most likely we will go with 24p standard def 16:9, just because i dont have a system set up for hd, besides i like the look of sd as opposed to hd for this film anyway.

any help would be greatly appreciated

If you're shooting to P2 card, you'll need Raylight to work with the footage.

If you're shooting to tape, you can capture as DV. However, if you're shooting 24p, Vegas Movie Studio cannot remove pulldown, so shoot 24p standard (not 24pA) and edit as 29.97 (not that there are any 24p presets).

If it's non-dialogue, in general, keep the audio between -12 and -20 dB. Other than that, you'll have to ask specific questions. :)

As for whether you should do the visual edit first, well, that depends. Sometimes timing the edits to the music works very, very well, and if this is primarily a musical piece, then it's probably the way you want to go. I'd just say, don't be slavish to it, or it might seem more mechanical than artistic.

about the music, should i be recieving in wave or mp3. and can i edit in vegas or do i have to do it in sound forge or sound forge audio studio and how does that work?

about rendering, what advise can u give about where to go once i have all the levels set and im happy with what i have in the timeline........do u just render straight to dvd and what settings should i use?

WAV is higher-quality, but you can use MP3.

For DVD, I'd use one of the NTSC templates (standard or widescreen, depending on your footage) without changing anything.

oh ok, sorry just a bit confused about that, thought i had to combine music track and sfx track into one first maybe.......like on a multi track recorder.....for the render, its quite auto matic then?........or do i choose an audio video format?........anyways thanks for th advise, maybe i could just bug you or someone else about the sound editing. Is it reccomended to use soundforge?.........im guessing that i should import into soundforge, get everything perfect the import onto the vegas music track?

oh and one more thing, since vegas studio doesnt do pulldown with 24p, am i gonna lose the effect of shooting in 24p as i am editing in 29.97?

Using Sound Forge is fine, though you may not have to for what you're doing. Unless you're planning to do lots of processing on the sound, you probably don't.

The audio will be exported as a single track, yes.

It will still look like 24p. You just won't be able to export as anything but 29.97.

Thank you so much david, you just cleared everything up for me. Yes i see what you mean about sound forge was fooling around with the audio last night.

Anyways read a lot of your posts and that tutorial was awesome. Best of luck to you
