Vegas Sounds like Nuendo

I usually edit my sound in vegas video and works great, a friend is got nuendo which has more bells and whistles for audio for picture work.

I do notice that anything you import into nuendo is automatically converted to your internal project setting rate. How come vegas does not do this, does it automatically internally somehow convert sample rates...on the fly, is this possible

say you have your vegas properties to 96,000khz and 24bit, then you import a 16bit wav file, is it converted on the fly to 24bit as you play back

and the other thing is that we played a sound file both in nuendo and then vegas, and they sonically sound the same, is this possible considering nuendo is 2000 dollars vs vegas which is 600. yes i know vegas as a video/audio editor and nuendo is audio only

but what gives, they both sounded the same

i always found this confusing

Well, data is data and any reasonable audio handling program should be able to play back both and they will sound exactly the same.

With Vegas you don't have to render anything on the timeline to get it to play so I would assume this is one reason why the audio needs no conforming. It is up or down sampled on the fly. I don't think this is exclusive to Vegas, however.

That is true, digital audio is just a stream of 0s and 1s. It all comes down to processors, both your main processor and more importantly, your sound card. Also, obviously, the quality of the speakers and ampliers make a huge difference as well.
