-Does vegas support it natively? if so, what kind of playback performance should I expect (8-core workstation)
-What software to use to convert footage to prores 422 on a PC?

I'll be working in a hybrid FCP/vegas environment soon. hoping someone has had previous experience with this.

In theory, all you supposedly need the latest version of Quicktime installed to use it. I have heard of and experienced problems with this, though. As for converting, not sure if Quicktime Pro does it or not.

Working between FCP and Vegas will most likely not be a pleasant experience. FCP likes only Quicktime; Vegas hates Quicktime.

yep, I don't expect smooth sailing with this. Would DNxHD be a viable intermediate codec among the two editors?

There is no software to encode in ProRES on a PC. You can only decode it, not encode it. You'd need a Mac for that. If you must use a codec that you need to send to a Mac person, then you should use Avid DNxHD. It's free, and as good as ProRES.

Jim, why do you say vegas hates QT? I do most of my work with QT files in vegas. What has been your problem?

What codec?

Honestly anytime I have had more then a few .mov clips in my timeline I start getting the "red frames" or freezes or sometimes the whole thing just shuts down and I'm starring at my desktop. Has happened with DNxHD, any sort of AVC files, ProRes. It would be quite nice to be able to use .mov confidently but in my experience you just cannot.

It also doesn't particularly care for rendering to QT.

This was all far less of a problem in earlier versions, but since 7 or 8, these have been persistent issues.

I use QT photo jpg quite often. Or lately, nikon d7000 mov h264 files. Projects with lots of cuts and transitions= 0 problems.

And always I use qt (aja 10bits or photo jpeg) or wmv as render output. No issues ever.
Hours and hours of edited videos.

i've been working with DNxHD .mov files in Vegas perfectly for a year or so. I work with them and render in the same format with no problems at all. Plus you can take those files to work on a Mac with no problems too.

if I load too much footage from my d7000, vegas sometimes crashes, but playback is real-time at half quality. I think David might be referring to prores 422 HQ codec that I originally asked about.
