Vegas Pro 8 (saving synced audio)???

I am shooting with a Panasonic Lumix GH1 and a H4N audio recorder. This is forcing me to sync all my audio. The actual syncing is no problem because I slate 90% of my audio, but...

How do I save the synced audio & video so it is no longer on the time-line? I am deleting the on-cam audio, putting in the new clean audio and wanting to save the new audio/video-sync possibly to another folder. I remember I was able to do this in Avid years ago.

Does anyone have any suggestions, other than rendering out each clip with new audio (complete waste of time for a simple task)? I just want a better way to organize my synced video/audio clips from my non-synced video/audio.

Any suggestions??!!??

I don't know if a clip based solution exist, but this event based workaround works all the time...:

1. Use a second Vegas instance as a storyboard.

2. Synch everything. Group each video event with new audio *or* drag the new audio as a take, synch... (so you will keep the original sound synch as a ref.) :

3. copy paste in your project. Grouping will be preserved even for a partial selection of your event.

Hope this help...

What do you mean by "second instance as storyboard"? I'm a little confused by your work-flow. I know how to group... Could you break it down more step by step. I'm a little new to Vegas.

What I'm basically looking for is... I will have a LOT of audio that will need to be linked to video. Trying not to have all the synced audio on a time-line because it will be way to much to sift through. Just looking for a good organizational technique like avid. I used to be able to sync and link audio in avid and have that put in a separate bin labeled "synced audio". I know this is not possible with Vegas, but... is there a work around. Maybe after you step by step your idea it will make more sense to me.

I love Vegas for it's intuitive work flow and speed, but with the generation of dSLR's beginning, the only good option is to get separate audio and there seems to be no way to organize all of this. I'm very surprised I'm the only one having this problem. Does everyone either have a mac or Avid, or does everyone keep all there synced clips on the time-line :(

I understand (and share...) your problem with the separate audio files...

My workaround:

Unlike all other video NLE i know of, you can start many instances of Vegas (start the program many times - i remember working once with about 10 instances at the same time...) .

You can use this unvaluable feature to copy from one project to another. So, you can have one Vegas project open (say "storyboard") to organise/synch your footage and another one (say "master") to edit. You copy entire or partial selections of synched events from your "storyboard" instance to your "master" editing instance, Am i clearer?

Let me make sure I understand what you want to do here.

You've taken the footage, synched up the separate audio, deleted the video audio, and you want to create "new" clips of the video and audio together?

Do you want them to be "together" just on the timeline, or do you actually want new files which have the video and audio together? (As in, you could open them as a single clip in something else.)

The first part is correct, I do want there to be a separate "clip" with video and new audio together and old audio deleted. This is not an uncommon thing for NLEs. Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer allows one to link up audio to video so it can be correctly organized, such as putting a synced audio/video clip in a new bin (possibly called "synced audio") for organization. I DO NOT think that I will have a clip to edit in other NLEs, I realize I would have to render that out. I just want the NLE to reference that I have linked new audio to video.

This is what ALL editors do that are editing a movie shot on film and edit on Avid or Final Cut Pro.

Logiquem,

I understand better what you are talking about. I was confused by the word instance. That seems like a decent work around, still wish there was better organization with this program. I am going to check into Edius 5.1 to see if they have better organization. I here people complaining about Premiere not having this option either, only Avid and Final Cut Pro that I know of so far. This is SHOCKING to me that Vegas does not have this option, as it would seem so elemental.

"still wish there was better organization with this program"

You're right. Me too. But i still prefer the Vegas flexibility for what i do in multimedia. I hate Avid workflow...

Did you made a search for a specific script for your task BTW? I wonder if somebody ever writed something like this. Seems pretty logical.

You can create events from regions. If you take your clip, switch out the audio, make a region out of it, and name the region, then save the project . . .

In a new project, if you go into the Explorer window, choose Region View, then click on the .veg file for that first project, all your regions will be displayed and can be brought in as clips with the audio and video synched just like you want.

Hum! David that's great. I never realised before that you can view regions from a project without actually opening it and drag & drop from there.

It will be pretty usefull with my new GH1/zoom H4N combo...

I agree, that seems like a pretty decent work around. I will give it a try. Thanks! (still wish ya didn't have to go through that for such a simple task, but nothings perfect)
