What's new in version 14.0
Video
Added Smart Zoom, Smart Scale, and Smart adaptive deinterlacing to allow you to upscale clips for Ultra HD delivery (requires a supported NVIDIA, AMD/ATI, or Intel GPU).

Added a Vignette video effect.

Added support for working with high-frame-rate (HFR) clips.

Added hover scrub to the Trimmer for fast scrubbing.

Updated support for current BlackMagic Design hardware:

DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G, 4K Pro, 4K Extreme, Studio 4K, SDI 4K, HD Extreme, Extreme 3D, Mini Monitor, and Mini Recorder.

Intensity Shuttle, Pro 4K, and Pro.

UltraStudio 4K Extreme, 4K, Pro, SDI, Express, Mini Monitor, and Mini Recorder.

Improved support for clips from RED ONE, EPIC, SCARLET, and WEAPON cameras.

Added Post lift, Post gamma, Post gain, and Dragon enhanced blacks controls to the R3D Decode Properties dialog.

Fixed an issue that caused certain clips to fail to load on upgraded RED WEAPON cameras with older firmware.

Fixed a crash that could occur when loading certain old RED ONE clips.

Fixed a color cast that could occur in clips shot with RED Motion Mount on the latest camera firmware.

Updated support for current AJA hardware.

Added a Resample mode drop-down list to the Video tab in the Project Properties dialog.

You can use this control to set the default resample mode for your project video. To override the project resample mode, you can use the Force resample and Disable resample event switches.

Improved playback and editing performance when using a Dynamic RAM Preview cache size greater than 200 MB.

Improved gamma calculations for still-image sequence renders for 32-bit floating point projects. Now levels for 32-bit floating point (video levels) and 32-bit floating point (full range) with nonlinear gamma are more consistent with 8-bit levels.

Added a Group Video and Audio Events script (Tools > Scripting) to allow you to easily group audio and video events from an imported EDL.

Increased the top-end of the range of event Velocity envelopes to 1,000% to increase the maximum possible overall velocity of video on the timeline to 40 times normal speed (in conjunction with the Playback rate event property).

New artwork and icons for buttons and other interface elements give the application an updated, more modern look and feel.

Support for reading and writing HEVC/H265 files.

Native support for reading ProRes 422 files without the need for QuickTime.

Thank you for the info! I bought V13 with the free upgrade for 14 so eventually I will install this. I expect the need for a powerful machine for some of that

Why ? This can be done via 3rd party ProRes compatible CODECs.

Which one? It's been a while since I looked, but the only one I was able to find was by Mirazon, and from what I could see it was no longer available for sale.

I know Vegasaur has a transcoder that will output Prores, but it will only do per-clip and not the project, and since it's just an FFMPEG shell, if you have any media that's not compatible with FFMPEG, it will not encode it.

I tried frameserving directly to FFMPEG as well and it works, but again, when you have clips incompatible with FFMPEG, like cineform, it doesn't encode them. So the only way I've been able to do it is to transcode the incompatible media first, then export, or export to another intermediate and then FFMPEG to Prores. Would be less of a headache if I could just render out like a normal, native codec.

...I downloaded the trial version and tried to see if I could find a ProRes export, which I couldn't.

What I did find was Cineform export for both .AVI and .MOV formats, which is my preferred editing CODEC.

I just did a quick unscientific test of rendering 4K footage down to 1080p using Vegas Pro 14, and it appears to be significantly faster than Vegas Pro 13. It's also making great use of my GPU compared to Vegas Pro 13.

That is great to hear. Looking at that long list of added capabilities, I thought it might be a little too ambitious (and be plagued with bugs). Would be wonderful if this transition turns out to be all it claims to be. I will be curious to see if down-scaling to SD for DVD is improved, or am I still going to have to round-trip through Virtual Dub or TMPGEnc, or through my new DVD recorder with down-scaling hardware. Please report on any experiences you have in that regard. And thanks for posting.

Which version are you on? There was some problem with Vegas versions of the past, going directly from 1080 to 480 for DVD -- the workaround was to downscale to 720 first, then to 480 -- but in more recent versions, the scaling for DVD seemed fine.

I'm on version 13. For my mixed-bag of camera projects, I've been dumping 4K, FHD, and 1280x720 on the same timeline and making it a 1280x720 project. Vegas does alright with down-scaling the 4K and UHD up to that point. But I find I still get better DVD quality if I go 3rd party for the last down-scale for DVD. I've been on Vegas Pro since version 8 and have noticed the down-scaling in version 13 is not as bad as I encountered previously, but wasn't sure if that was due to my current crop of cameras or something Sony did. I used to use lots of HDV footage and also intermingled a fair amount of interlaced stuff. For title/credit texts, I bring the DVD-scaled file back into Vegas and clip out the video with text, then change the original portion from 1280x720 to 720x480 and insert that into my final render. Downsizing text in Virtual Dub leaves too big of jagged edges and this extra step helps a little.

Did you have cineform installed prior to vegas 14? Is cineform included with vegas14? I don't get it to export on my system.

I have the free GoPro software installed on my system that includes Cineform export. I selected AVI output and then selected the Cineform CODEC.

Installed beta version of Vegas 14 on my Windows 10 computer. Got random black screens and the next time I reboted my computer I got a blue screen of death. Somehow Vegas corrupted the windows master boot record (MBR). That's it, so be carefull. For now I'll stick to 13 version.

The beta, or the trial download?

I finally received the upgrade notice from MAGIX, which kind of p*ssed me off because their upgrade price is the SAME as buying the FULL version a day or two ago, and the SAME as buying Vegas Pro 13 + Vegas Pro 14 was in August. They probably did not intend it this way, but this feels like a slap in the face given how they had priced the FULL versions.
