vegas pro 12 crashing upon importing media

i bought vegas pro 12 edit version, and although i have used it before on non hd projects, im doing my first hd content project and it is crashing upon importing media.

media is sony hx9v (1080p60) footage that i converted down to 720p30 .mov files.
i can import the first 20 or so clips without issue, but after that the program simply hangs and i have to task manager force shut down.

is the problem lack of ram?
i have 8 gigs.

if yes, is there a workaround?
does vegas import ALL MEDIA into ram? is there an option of only doing so to the clips that im working on?

what workarounds are there aside from spending a grand or more on a new computer

thanx

Why are you bothering to convert your source files?
If it's a case of your computer not being powerful enough to handle them, convert them to MXF format instead.
I guarantee that format is a lot easier for Vegas to handle than mov.

Yes, my guess would be to start by avoiding mov files on Vegas under Windows (native). I assume you are not running it under a Windows emulator on Mac?

If anything, try using the files native. You don't have to convert them. I assume it produces AVCHD files? Vegas works fine with them. You can use the utility from Sony to rename the files on import. If you do want to convert them, mxf is ok, I do that occassionally, but I also convert to AVI if I want the best results.

You should not be crashing because of the 8GBs of RAM. However, I would recommend upgrading the RAM as you build more complex projects you will likely need more than 8.

Also, you are putting all the project files, etc. on a fast external drive, right? I have found that Vegas does not like dealing with USB 2.0 drives. I have more problems with them than others. Stick with eSata or USB 3.0. The program itself can live on your C: drive, but the project files and media should go out on a separate drive.

yes im using a dell laptop, not a mac.

the reason im not using original avchd files is because i need to mix them with footage that was recorded with a kodak zx3 underwater camera and that records into .mov
also, this will be uploaded onto youtube and since youtube does not do 60p, i figure converting them into 720p30 beforehand, would give me max performance out of the laptop.

im keeping footage on system drive (not external drive)
ive done basic projects like this in the past and it worked

so what would you recommend since i need to combine two different formats above?
im happy with 720 rendered output.

convert ALL footage into avi? (btw which avi... xvid? mpeg4? mjpeg?)
or MXF? (what can i use to convert to this format?)

I regularly do projects where I have MOV, MXF, AVI and MP4 files on the timeline (all with different properties) with no problems at all.

Just because it worked in the past (this was with SD files, right?) doesn't mean that it's a good idea.
As mentioned in this thread, pick up an external drive (they're very cheap these days) and put all your video files on there. Your projects will run MUCH smoother.

im happy with 720 rendered output.

I render all my YouTube stuff using the MainConcept AVC/AAC 1440x1080 MP4 internet preset and it looks just fine to me.

Yeah, your project media does not, in any way, all have to be the same format, nor does it have to be the same as your output format. That's been a hallmark of Vegas since the beginning.

Your best bet is almost always using the original clips.

is it ok to use a usb3 key as an external drive?

i have a 32 gig really fast (100mb read 50mb write) usb3 key drive.
after converting my files so that they are all avi 720p30, they will all just barely fit onto the usb key.

how would that compare to say a external usb3 7200rpm drive?

It would work fine. I would keep everything in the project on it, though, including the Vegas project file, so that you don't have problems with it later if the drive letter is reassigned.

thanx.

but if my output is set to 30p, will 60p footage not play in slow motion?

No, not unless you slow it down. It will simply be converted to 30p and will appear as though it was shot at 30p originally.

If you do this, best to set Resample to Disabled.
