I'm getting the impression that the only way to preview out in vegas is to pass through your dv device. Is this correct? Pleeeaase say it's not so!!!

Re: vegas preview out

Right, Vegas can only preview out to firewire. So you need to have something, some sort of DV to analog device connected, whether that's the camera, a deck, or something like the Pyro DV->analog video converter...

Re: vegas preview out

so can I at least put vegas on daul monitors and preview on # 2 huh, huh, can I? pleeeaaaase say I can. you just gotta say I can....Damn it say I can or.....you know I can you're just not gonna share... come on I can right?

Re: vegas preview out

You could have your preview on a 2nd computer monitor, but you cannot depend on that for an accurate representation if your delivery format is out in the non-computer world.

Why don't you tell us what it is you were HOPING to do and why?

Re: vegas preview out

If it's any help, I use dual monitors.  I have the timeline, and the following tabs (explorer, trimmer, transitions, video fx, and media generators), and mixer panel on the left screen.  On the right screen, I have only the Media Pool and Video Preview windows.

The Video Preview window display is sized to as large as it will display and it's 720x480x32.   The preview does lag a bit (depending on fx, track motion, number of tracks, etc.), and does not display all frames when set to Preview (full), Good (full) or Best (full).  If I have to really preview a specific part, I render it to RAM or just render a quick .wmv. (wmv=weapons of mass video)

I'm using a P4, 2.52 GHz, 1 GB ram, project files on separte drive from system, WINXP SP2, ATI RADEON 9500, 128 MB, blah, blah, blah... :D

I agree with Gary -- what is it you're hoping to accomplish?

Is it because you like what you see on the computer monitor -- the resolution, the color representation, etc. -- better than what you see on a TV?

If so, that's exactly the wrong reason to do what you're wanting to do. The point of previewing out on a TV (or NTSC monitor) is to see what it looks like on a TV. The color, the resolution, the CG -- it will all be different, and things which are possible on a computer monitor are not possible on a TV. You'll end up with colors inappropriate for a TV, text too fine to seen on a TV, etc..

If you're wanting to save the expense of an external monitor, I'd point you toward the Toshiba 14" flatscreen TV you can find at Best Buy for about $150. It's a favorite around these parts and popular in the industry as well.

But why don't you tell us what you're looking for?

Re: vegas preview out

I guess that I might have added that I also use the little Toshiba 14AF44 for my NTSC monitor. Not just in Vegas, but in anything going out to the DV deck. Works like a charm. As stated, $149.99 at Best Buy.

Re: vegas preview out

Thanks all...I just want to be able to see a fairly large representation of my work. I use prem 6.5 and matrox rt 2500 now which allows me to preview out on my 20" TOSHIBA in real time. I have grown used to seeing clips I capture this way. In vegas I,m gonna have to put the DVX in line all the time which I don't wanna do. So my option is to preview on monitor # two ...Sucks cos as you say, it's not the way one want's to preview.

Re: vegas preview out

It won't hurt your DVX. It won't add hours to the heads or anything. It's the better way to go.

Re: vegas preview out

Even better still would be to get a cheap camera (*any* DV camera) for playback, which would free up your DVX. Or, the PYRO AV/Link (I think that's the name of it) which does firewire<->Analog conversions, including component I/O.

If you had a camera, deck, or Pyro connected to your computer, you could see full-screen previews on your TV.

Re: vegas preview out

OK thanks for the ideas. One more question...If I use DVX for pass through, should I remove the tape? Is tape always engaged on video heads?

Re: vegas preview out

You don't need the tape at all. Remove it.

The tape may be engaged depending on your camera settings. In stand-by mode, it isn't.

Re: vegas preview out

buy a cheap DV camera as a deck and use that as firewire converter to the monitor. Saves on wear to the DVX. Many DV cameras have S-video out and many monitors have s-video in.

Re: vegas preview out

I think that is one thing that vegas lacks is preview out only through firewire. I love vegas and don't really like premiere(switched from 6.0 to vegas 4.0 now 5.0).
My workthrough is that I have a Canopus advc-100 converter that is connected to a vcr(in and out) and the vcr goes to my 36"flat screen for preview. This works out great for me and the converter was about $250.00. I also do vhs to dvd transfers and this setup works out great with no problems. You can also plug your dvx right in front of the advc-100

Re: vegas preview out

awesomesean
How did you do with your conversion to vegas from premiere? I'm considering the same. I have premiere 6 with storm and am looking at vegas 5...

Re: vegas preview out

For me I liked the workflow of vegas better. I feel more creative with vegas also(I know it sounds weird)but I think it has something to do with the interface. For me it just works better. I have heard from other people that have premiere pro that there still alot of problems with it. Really they all do the same thing if you look at it with a broad view, I mean I still could produce a good wedding video with movie maker know what I mean. The switch was a little hard at first just because the workflow is different but it only took me a couple of weeks to get the hang of it and and I am still learning. dl the trial version and try it but you need to give it a chance. It looks hard at first but I thing once you learn the basics it is easier. The audio fades are incredible in vegas and premiere does not have a leg i think when it comes to the extra stuff vegas can do like total cd creation with tracks. Dvda2 needs a little more work but it works great too. I switched from encore and the only thing I miss is the integration with photoshop but thats ok(am I still typing :) ) Anyway I like vegas and the only move I plan on making in the future is to go to FCP but we all know what that means right....
